Thread: Do MOBO get tried?

    Do MOBO get tried?

I was wondering if MOBO's get tried and wear out - I've been using my comp now for about 4 years, with everyday use. I've replaced with new HDD, added RAM, ran Search & Destroy, Malwarebytes, defraged, ran a registry cleaner, etc; and it still dosen't make a difference, its still sloooooow.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Motherboards can and do break down. For example, the capacitors on the boards can eventually leak over time, but it's not as if you're going to notice a slow progression in performance on that basis. Does the PC have problems turning on sometimes, or perhaps even failing POST? Sometimes these are indications something is afoot with capacitors, but a sure-fire way to check would be a visual inspection. A classic example would be a build-up of crud on any capacitors, which could also be accompanied by damage to the motherboard from leaking electrolytes.

However, without going too far down the line and pointing you in the wrong direction, it's difficult to provide more insight without really knowing your current set-up, i.e. hardware installed, OS, free disk space, etc.

    Not really...but Windows does.

When you swapped hard drives, did you do a fresh install?

And really, we do need full specs.

Yes I did a fresh install of Windows XP Pro on my new HDD. I have 30GB left on a 120GB drive. I also just took a can of compressed air and blew out the case and looked for anything out of the ordinary not finding anything wrong.
I have 1GB of ram, and the XP service pack 3 installed - all hardware is what came with it ie; sound card, video card, all on pci slots.
Hope this helps narrow things down, I may need just a big hammer

Okay, as far as XP is concerned, that looks okay. What processor do you have in the PC? If you're unsure, you can always download and install Speccy, which will give you those details.

Now, turning to the subjective issue...

When you state the PC is slow, what's it actually slow in doing? Are you talking about basic stuff, such as loading the operating system, using your browser, etc., or are there more specific issues. Bear in mind: The more information you can offer, the easier it'll be to try and provide some relevant replies.

Ok, turning the computer on seems to take normal amount of time. (I really just turn it on first thing in the morning and come back to start working on it about 10-15 mins later). When I'm at a web page and I go to scroll down by using the wheel on the mouse, the page hesitates, it delays for a bit before the page will start to scroll down, same thing happens when I try to scroll back up.... doesn’t matter if I try to use the scroll bar thats on the right side of the web page or not.
When I click on a link button the button doesn’t show that it has been clicked on right away, it's also delayed, before it shows that it was clicked on. When I Hoover my cursor over a link it also takes time before it will show me the little hand indicating that I can click it. When I try to exit a program by "Xing-out" it is also delayed before the page will close, sometimes I click the "X" three or four times before it closes.
It's problems like these that I'm having, if you need more info let me know.
Thanks all the feed back thus far...

    What AV are you using?

Does it have 'scan ahead' features? 'Link protection'?

Are you running more than one anti-malware app with active protection?

90GB used by a fresh installation on a new HD is very excessive. Are you sure that the drive was empty and that all you have installed is a new installation of Windows.

I just downloaded and installed Firefox. Everything seems to work fine now, including some other problems I've had. So is there anyway to fix IE if it's broken... I'm guessing my problems are in IE?

I'm using "Malware Bytes" a free AV download. I have the Intel Pentium 4 CPU.
