Thread: floppy LED stays on

    Angry floppy LED stays on

The light on my floppy drive constantly stays on when computer is running. I reset the BIOS, and the floppy is enabled in the BIOS. I've checked several times, and the cables are correctly connected. The floppy drive also can't be read in Windows 98. Its not checked when the computer boots up so I can't access a boot disk(it doesn't make the drive checking grinding sound it should make, but the light (which is green, not orange)comes on and stays on(I have a celeron 400, 32MB RAM, 4GIG HDD).
    PLEASE HELP

    Hi Cranium,

Have you just recently installed the floppy drive? Usually, the constant light signifies that the cable is backwards.

If you haven't installed the new floppy recently, then I am stumped. Could be that the drive is shot.

Maybe some other guys will have an opinion or two.

Nope, no other ideas, cable backwards is the only thing I know of that will make the LED stay on. Re-check the cable, it's backward...the colored wire on the cable must be aligned with the #1 pin on the controller, and usually on the power plug side of the drive. Also check to be sure it's not one pin off on either end.

Been there. As delivered, my new Teac drive would only accept the keyed connector one way. I didn't bother to check pin one against the red stripe. Doh! Needed needle-nose pliers to snap off a section of the phenolic board to accept the key.
