all I was trying to do was get a USB mouse to work and now my CD-ROM has disappeared. I'm not sure if when I was attempting to re-install the drivers for the mouse this occured but it appears as if it(the CD-R)has been taken out of my computer. When I boot up I get this message "Sec Master Drive-ATAPI Incompatible" Press F1 to resume, However all four primary and secondary devices are listed when I boot. Formerly the CD-R was "D" drive and the CD-RW was "E" drive, now the "D" has become the CD-RW and "E" has disappeared. I have scanned for viruses and performed "safe mode" scan and defrag but no luck. NOTE: before the first couple of cold starts under device manager the Secondary IDE Controller[dual fifo] had a yellow exclamation mark indicating the problem but as I mentioned it also has disappeared and now only the CD-RW remains as "D". Hope what I've written is understandable and please help if you can. I'm running win98se

Just after posting the previous message I went ahead and searchrd through
again to find a conflict or anything that might indicate a problem and didn't find anything, so I then shutdown and rebooted because I usually leave it on standby and this time the Secondary IDE Controller caution has reappeared in the device manager and now I don't show either drives "D" or "E". HHEEEEEELP!!

Hi it's me again. since my last post, several things have occurred with both the CD-R and the CD-RW this morning after a bootup freeze where it was indicated that both ATAPI drives were incompatible and I had to reset to boot they both reappeared and worked fine for about five minutes until I tested the CD-R drawer(pushed the button to open the drawer) and then the HDD light came on steady as well as the CD-R light and then once again
it disappeared from the system. now both the 'D' and 'E' drives are gone from everywhere except screen at bootup. What can I do to repair this problem? Did I overwrite something when I tried to reinstall the drivers for the optical mouse? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks

Only thing I can think of right now is check Device Manager for conflicts.

Tooo much running through the old hair-free noggin...

Thanks for the reply Paleo Pete. Where can I learn how to recognize a conflict in the DM and how to correct or repair it if necessary without having to have someone else to do it. Sorry for all the questions but I'm still learnin' Thanks again!!!

The Device Manager is located at Start\Settings\Control Panel\System icon. Click the Device Manager tab. Click the + beside the device in question and if it has a conflict it should have a yellow ! or red X beside it. Double click the "splatt" as they are called, and it should bring up the troubleshooting wizard.

Man, I'm ready to take up knitting or something a little less frustrating.
Not really. I went in to check and guess what? No CDR or CDRW is listed in the device manager. Then I reboot and everything is perfect, no conflicts to investigate, everything works like a charm until I attempt to use the CDR and FREEZE-O !! After a few cold starts once again all is well, then
randomly either the system freezes or just the "D" drive shows up which is actually the "E" drive. What do you think would cause the random behavior,
either a bad motherboard or could it be the CDR going bad?? Once again all drivers are good, no known conflicts, everything else running perfectly, etc. I'm ready to toss some parts and start over. Thanks

by the way, I ran all day yesterday without a problem, copied some CD's,
backed up a few items etc. without so much as a sniffle. That's why it's so damm frustrating. Paleo I'm countin' on ya. Just don't make me take my friend the computer to the big dept. store for repairs, He hates it there...

Have you tried the USB patch for W98SE?

You fit the profile AMD proc and VIA chipset. The info at Microsoft says USB devices won't work properly but doesn't say how they won't work!

Hats off to all for the help. Especially you, MJC... very informative info on the incompatibilities of win98se and USB devices that everyone should understand who are trying to use ANY USB device with this OS

It appears that I threw everything out of wack when I tried to force the
mouse to work as a USB instead of PS/2 I compounded the problem by reloading drivers (all explained in the MS knowledgebase) Thanks again!!

Are you up and running now?
The issue with the patch for AMD's(or processors running at 350 or higher) and the VIA chipset has to do with timing and the clock cycles allowing the peripherals access to the cpu. Charles covered the timing issue well in his PC Guide.
Oddly enough I had the USB problem with Win 98(1st) I had the SiS 7001 USB chipset which is also attached to that list in the HP help section. I did a clean install of Win 98SE expecting see the big yellow exclamation in the device manager when I enabled USB, but It wasn't there...I had the patch on a disc ready to install. Now my HP 932C works perfectly on USB.
