Problem with Samsung 225BW 22" LCD

Hi,

I recently re-installed WinXP Pro SP3 + latest Nvidia driver for my video card and now i run into a problem where when i remove the DVI cable from my monitor then connect it back in i get no picture and a pop up message saying "check signal cable". I share this monitor with my Playstation 3 console (DVI-M to HDMI-M cable) so i often swap between the two which is an inexpensive alternative to buying a box switcher (not the technical term).

Is there a setting on the monitor or Nvidia control panel software i need to change? I end up having to reboot my PC in order to get picture again

Specs:
WinXP Pro SP3
BFG GeForce 6800 GS OC 256MB + Nvidia driver v169.21
Samsung SyncMaster 225BW 22" LCD

First off.
Unplugging a monitor while the computer is running is a BAD idea
It leads to some real hardware problems and can cause damage to the video card

The only way to get the video back is to force a video card refresh
This is done each time you reboot (warm or cold)
in a few cases it also does it after going into hibernation

Do yourself a favor. Invest in a KVM or monitor switch.
Or better yet another monitor.

Or to save some cash. SHUT the system down before you switch the cable

ok so how do i force it into hibernation so that i can pull the cable out, pop it back in, then take it out of hibernation? it's not convenient for me to turn off my PC cause i need to have it on 12-16 (sometimes 24) hours a day, everyday. I plan on buying a large 1080p plasma in the future but not right now, the market is still too pricey for me.

you will need to check your OS and or system for a utility to force it into hibernation mode

in some systems it only requires a keyboard combo to do it
others require it to be set by inactive time

If/Do you have only one monitor
Then what good does it do to leave the system running without a monitor?
Risking possible damage to the video card and the pins on the monitor cable connector .. When you remove the cable to make the switch ( Hopefully your turning the monitor off before disconnecting it)

nails, or whatever your name is, sorry i intruded on your thread. Pardon me for thinking that the internet was a forum for the free exchange of ideas, I must have been mistaken. It is ashame you respond how you do. I always have thought that it is a deficiency in ones upbringing which leads him or her to be so rude and obnoxious when one is asking politely for help. Clearly this applies to your fine self.

Thanks,
Alvin
