[Help] Laptop Can't Connect to Wired Connection

Hey there, i'm new to these forums as you can see. I need help with my laptop.

Right now I only have a Cable Modem at the moment connected to my desktop. Now since I do not have WiFi yet, I wanted to hook up my laptop to the wired connection.

So here is the problem, my laptop recognizes the connection, but it will not allow me to connect to the internet at all!

I used to be able to connect to the wired connection, but now for some reason I can not.

Can some one help me or point me in the right direction?

Thank You for reading and helping in advance.

First, what operating system are you using, ie Windows XP/Vista/Linux?
Has it ever worked?
Are you using the same cable as was connected to the desktop PC or is this a different cable?
Do you get a link light at the RJ45 socket on the laptop when you connect that cable?
Have you been connecting the laptop to a different network?
Do you have IP assigned automatically or IP assigned manually?

And finally, did you try connection with firewall disabled?

Running Windows 7

Yes it has worked before.

Yes using the same cable as the Desktop PC. I unplug it from the desktop and then plug it into the laptop.

A link light? You mean when you plug it in the socket it self lights up? If so, then yes it lights up.

Yes the laptop has been connected to another network, I was "borrowing" someones wireless signal for a little bit cause I don't have WiFi yet.

I believe the IP is assigned automatically.

I have not tried connecting with my Firewall Disabled.

Sorry if I can not answer your questions any better. I'm just learning about PCs and all that other stuff lol. Thanks for your help

Sorry for the double-post, but I didn't see an "Edit" button.

I just wanted to say that I was able to fix it. Anyways, thanks for your help!

It is likely he rebooted the cable modem. In my experience, cable modems cache the MAC address of the single client allowed. Without a router, you connect a pc to a cable modem and it works fine and can surf. If you disconnect the machine and plug in another, the new machines MAC address will not match. The modem will give you an IP but you cannot surf. If this happens you should reboot the modem. Some modems, especially those that do VOIP, will have a battery backup. When you unplug the modem make sure the lights on it go off, if they do not, it is still getting power and that power source should be disconnected for a minute and then reconnected. If you connect a cable modem to a router, the routers MAC address will always be the same, you can plug devices in the LAN side of the router because all outgoing traffic to the internet will use the NAT IP and WAN port of the router.
