What's the difference between 3 GHz and 3E GHz?
Please take a look at this Intel web site:
http://processorfinder.intel.com/Lis...483&SearchKey= You will see that for the processor speed some has E added to it like 3 GHz vs. 3E GHz, and 3.20 GHz vs. 3.20E GHz. Looking at their spec info, I don't really see any differences between the E and non-E speed. Anyone here happen to know the difference between E and non-E processor speed? And if so, which is better (assuming the bus speed and cache are same)? At first I thought the E was for Extreme Edition, but I don't think that is it because I found a separate set of list like the one above site shows for the P4 Extreme Edition. Look forward to hear from the experts... Thanks! |

The x.x0E processors use the older 478 socket while the non-E ones use the newer LGA775 socket.

The E means it is a s478 Prescott core. The best and last core of the s478 era with it's faster FSB, smaller process size, and hyper threading. The ones without an E can also be s478 but are the earlier cores usually with a slower FSB. You won't find a s775 with an E on the end even though Prescott cores lived on into the early s775 days.

Cool. Thanks, jlreich! So basically the ones with E are probably better than the ones without E.

Yes, but make sure your system supports the 800MHz FSB. You will usually see something on the motherboard box or manual about being "Prescott ready".

Thanks again jlreich.
And yes, my mobo does support 800MHz FSB. |
