Question Windows XP poor audio quality

Okay, i just installed windows xp pro on my system, had winME before. i've installed it before and went back to winme cuz it seemed faster. when i had it installed before, everything worked fine. when i installed it this time, i've discovered that all my audio sounds like crap. my mp3's are especially affected. it doesn't seem to be windows media player, cuz the quality was still bad in winamp. could it be that i need a better sound card? right now i'm using the integrated AC-97 audio on my Shuttle AK31 motherboard, and its been fine up till now.

Check the Windows advanced volume controls, your speaker connections and all volume-audio controls that may be related to your onboard audio and all media players.

If you're into serious audio on your comp look for a good audio card, there's been plenty of discussion here on the forum about what are the good ones.

all the connections are good, so i guess it must be the onboard audio, but its just strange that it would work beautifully in ME but not in XP.

No, not really strange, different set of drivers....check with Shuttle, they may have XP specific drivers for the onboard sound....

After a little digging around it does seem that your problem is not unheard of and it is dependant on the driver version...so some sifting around on Shuttle's site and maybe VIA's (since it is a VIA chipset board the best driver source might be VIA) is in order....
