*sigh* Just when I thought my system was working fine I find that I get no sound from audio cd's. I've checked about everything I can think of and still no go. Heres my situation; Master volume on cd player is on and all the way up, nothing is muted. Correct drive is selected in multimedia properties-cd music. In the audio tab, my sound card is selected for preferred device in playback and recording. Sound card drivers are installed. In advanced audio properties for audio playback, hardware acceleration is at full, and sample rate conversion quality is set to good, same settings in recording advanced properties.
In the add/remove programs, windows set up, all components of multimedia components are selected. In device manager - cd rom, shows my cd drive, and properties just shows cd rom. For sound, video, and game controlers I have listed; game device joystick, PCI audio accelerator, virtual MPU-401, all from my sound card (which is a Hercules Fortissimo II) also listed is a wave device for voice modem. In properties for PCI audio controller, my sound card is listed and status shows it working properly. On the control panel for the sound card, master volume is up, speakers are operational, (sound test checks out just fine). In the mixer area of that control panel cd volume is up and speakers are on. At this point I'm not sure where else to look to make sure my settings are correct. I get sound from wav files and in games, and I can record and playback on sound recorder from a mic but not cd. About the only thing I can think of that may be the problem is on my sound card there are two plug ins for the cord from my cd rom, and the manual doesn't specify which one to use. There is just a tiny, grainy picture of it with the caption "make sure cd rom is plugged into the sound card" Does anyone here think this might make a difference? I am going to try switching plugs anyway, but I am still seeking input in case that isn't the problem. Thanks. ------------------ "Clone me, Dr. Memory." It's probably the cable from the cdrom to sound card. There may be a jumper so set whether it uses tha analog or digital connector...if it doesn't work connected to the one it's on now, try the other one, like you plan to do, and I bet it will work...

Hey goonz, you/I/we were right, just had to change the connection on the sound card and viola, this baby rocks. Now I'm a happy camper
At least for the time being. Keeping fingers crossed I don't run into any more glitches.------------------ "Clone me, Dr. Memory." The Firesign Theater, Were all Bozo's on this bus
