Post Monitor has odd bluish square on boot and shutdown

Recently, when booting up the computer, I see a faint, dark bluish square appear in the middle of the screen for a second or two as the computer is just booting. It disappears as soon screen starts displaying the boot sequence. On shutting down, I see the same bluish square just before the computer powers down, which then collapses into bright blue streak that dissolved into a pinpoint as the monitor goes to black.

The montitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 950p and the video card a Matrox G450. Bought about the same time, a little over a year ago.

I'm guessing this isn't a good thing.

That square could be the monitors “No Signal” Message Box.
Does it appear when you power up the Monitor and not the system?

I have seen the streak to pinpoint you describe with screens (TVs mostly) that were having problems with either the CRT or the power supply (high voltage)...if it still has any warranty left look into that, it may run that way for a very long time or it may quit tomorrow...
