Two days ago I bought a brand new and shiny TEAC CDW40E writer (bulk, with no software whatsoever included). Luckily I already had Nero 5.5, so I installed it. First the CDW was put as primary slave (with the HDD as primary master) - win XP detected it allright, all was well but Nero doesn't recognise it as a burner (it scans and displays something like "virtual device..."). OK, so I then installed the CDW as secondary master (and left the CD-ROM out of the system for now, just to see if ithe writer works). Everything's fine until the same symptoms show up in Nero. It doesn't detect the damned thing... What to do?

If this was a legit buy I'm surprized ther was no software with it. But first:
Did you assign the jumpers right? Does it play CD's but not burn? 2: I'm not familiar with Nero (unless someone wants to introduce me ) but is it new enough to recognize the brand new Teac? Try Teac's site for drivers? Have you tried, (please don't hit me!) EZ CD? Also someone more familiar with Nero might know some setting amiss. Thumbs up to you (as Nero may have done in his day).------------------ This space for George Carlin quotes: You never really learn to swear until you learn to drive. (He should broaden that to pc's.)

It was a most legit buy, yes - but I had to choose between a bulk version (with no software whatsoever) and a retail one (more $$). Being a little short on cash...
I figured it out at last (sort of, anyway) - simply by using win XP's CD-writing facility. After burning 3 cd's (piece of cake, absolutely no problem) I even wonder why was I searching for specialised burning software when I've been having the solution right under my nose. XP saved me once again :-) |

I'd say your problem is that the drive is too new for the version of Nero you are running...try grabbing the latest update. The primary purpose of updates to burning software is adding support for new burners.
Nero is better than the native XP software (many more options)...plus you may need to disable the XP native burning software to properly install Nero. ------------------ mjc Links list:Computer Links Celts are the men that heaven made mad, For all their battles are merry and their songs are all sad.

Thank you, mjc - indeed I suspected the same thing (drive too new, Nero slightly too old). Until I will get the latest incarnation of Nero, I'm however pretty pleased with XP's native cd-writing too. But just in case, could you please tell me how to disable it if I would decide to install Nero?

This is the link for Nero downloads. (about 11-12Mb in size) just installover the top of existing installation. Also if you go to the bottom of the download page you will see 2 files at the bottom of the page. One gives all recognised drivers and the other one gives TEST.exe this will check you drive for compatabillity with Nero http://www.ahead.de/en/download.htm ------------------ Ernie
