Post Serial Port - COM 1

Serial Port - COM 1

I am trying to resolve a problem with a serial port on a Toshiba laptop. A “device” connected to the serial port is not recognised by its associated software which persists with an error message “Device is not connected”. The device, its connecting cable and the software work OK on my PC. Device Manager reports that the serial port is working properly and I can use other devices through the port therefore I assume (wrongly?) that there is nothing wrong with the port. The sofware company sent me another cable as they thought that there might be an intermittent fault with my cable but the problem persists. The software company also suggested that to resolve any potential conflicts (none are reported in Device Manager - my OS is Win98SE) I should un-install all the software associated with the devices previously used on that port and also the parallel port but that has had no effect.
The simple solution is to give up the idea of using this device on the laptop and resign myself to using it on the PC but there must surely be an answer to the problem. Any ideas on how I might track down the cause of the problem and rectify it would be gratefully received.

If your device works on another PC then the only thing left to check out is what IRQ your laptop uses for Com 1 and what Mobo Address is being used. Get the laptop using the same IRQ & Mobo address as the PC and you will be in business!

Yeah, you need to check to see if it works on the desktop. It could be flaky software.
Also go into the notebook's BIOS setup and check the settings for the COM port, make sure it's nothing odd, and make sure it matches what Windows shows in the Control Panel.
Can this thing run using USB, if your 'book has it?
