I have a friend with a Dell Inspiron 800 notebook (at least I think that's what it's called) with Windows ME. It's giving him endless grief. He want's me to install Windows 2000 on it (he bought it).
I don't have much experience with notebooks, period. Their integrated-everything, proprietariness scare me ![]() In terms of RAM, HDD space and processor the system can handle Windows 2000 no problem, but what do you think? Should I plan to take a week's leave from work to get it running right? I should say he also has a full suite of CD's from Dell, including the WinME restore, utilities, etc. so if all else fails I *should* at least be able to ge ME back up.Any comments, experiences welcome. And if you never hear from me again you'll know that things went terribly wrong....... ------------------ sleddog [sleddog.f2s.com] |

I've installed Win2k on a few Dell laptops and haven't had any problems.
Plus your friend should know his service code ( sometimes located at the bottom of the laptop). Once you know that you can go to Dell support and get any Win2k drivers for his computer that you may need. Good Luck ------------------ Comment heard from a Klingon programmer. "Debugging? Klingons do not debug. Our software does not coddle the weak"

I would start out with a dual-boot, cause you can get rid of ME later if 2000 works out for you (there may be compatibility problems with things like sound/vid cards and specifically modems)
There are good instructions here...worked for me...have fun http://www.zdnet.com/zdhelp/stories/...430684,00.html
