Post System hangs after running Defrag

My UK-bought IBM ThinkPad iSeries 1200, with pre-installed Windows ME, 128 MB, Intel Celeron 600, nothing added or removed, has been working ok until I started running Defrag. Ever since the system (not Defrag) hangs, ie the screen freezes up irrespective of which program I am running. There are no error messages; the computer just hangs and I have to run ScanDisk every day in order to use the laptop.
I have been through MS Search using keywords kbwinme, computer hangs, defragmentor and looked at every article which might have a bearing on this problem. There appears to be nothing in the Knowledge Base. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Hmmm, I wonder why nobody is touching this particular one. BO? Can't be, have just had my annual bath. Garlic? Never touch the stuff. I wonder what else it could be. . .

Be patient, Pianorak. They may be busy elsewhere, and I haven't a clue.

Kayofcircles speaks truth. Patience is a good thing in most situations and this is probably one of them. The laptop site is the red headed step child in most forums, ie: there aren't as many experts or even those who think they are experts to "wade into" the stream with laptops. I find that you still can't beat the price $ here, eh? And also, I too know little about laptops. I've had lots of problems with mine. That's why I opted for an extended warrantee upon purchase. A laptop computer is one of the only things that I'd recommend buying extended warrantees for. I've had mine running scan disk for the past hour now. I've had to reboot and start over three times. Defrag takes hours too. I just figured that this is the norm.
The guys who know will get to this eventually. Hang in there.

Have just written 100 lines: "I must try and be more patient."
I hope I have been forgiven.

Gee, I love those words like "irrespective".
No apologies necessary. Garlic not a problem. Bath... maybe.

Thank you tjaymadison - This Apprentice Geek has been reading and re-reading option one (two and three I don't think apply) and is by now cross-eyed and somewhat confused. For instance, under Troubleshooting Static VxD Problems it says:
<<If the problem is still resolved, repeat step 1 through step 3, but click to select the next check box on the Static VxDs tab.>>
Is it safe to assume that this should perhaps read: If the problem is still not resolved . . . ?
