Question will not start at all

Hello. I recently was going to switch processors in my laptop with another. As I got into the case and then realized the processors were different, I went ahead and put everything back together. Now nothing happens. I get the battery light and the cd rom light but nothing else happens. No whirs, whistles or beep. Nothing. I re-checked all the connections and nothing is misplaced or broken and everything is connected. Is there some kind of "secret" switch that I trigered or maybe some simple thing that is commonly overlooked?

Any help would be great.

Thanks!

Did you put the different processer in? Will the motherboard support the processer you put in? Well try to reset the CMOS. There should be jumper on the motherboard where you can do this. Motherboard book should tell you where to reset it. If you dont have one go to driverguide.com and try finding the model on the motherboard.

Welcome, ajp!

Inside the case of most laptops are fairly fragile, thin foil-ribbon
type connectors that are easily crimped the wrong way or damaged
when disturbed, or even just touched with a bare finger.

Since it's not working now anyway, you might just as well open it up
again carefully and see if you can spot anything obviously wrong.

Could you have touched the CPU or RAM without grounding yourself first?

Hello,

Thank you both for the info.

I am pretty sure I was grounded and I did remove the cpu. I then replaced it. What is odd to me is that I had two laptops. I removed the cpu from the first, but not the other. However.. when attempting to power up, they both respond the same, no noise or activity, just the battery (power) and cd rom light illuminate. This leads me to believe that there is something that needs to be done to reset something. Considering they both respond alike, I feel safe to assume I did not accidently break the same thing in both. What are the chances.

I have worked on desktops for quite some time. This is however, my first attempt at anything with a portable. I looked at driverguide.com for answers as to where I could find the jumber to reset the cmos, but could not find any info. Is there anywhere else I could look. I know the manufacturer will not divulge any info in hopes of getting customers residual cash for repairs. But there has got to be some way I can find the docs to do this myself.

Again, all your great help is appreciated.

Thanks!

If you look hard enough, you may be able to find REAL documentation (not the useless advertising crap) for the laptops depending on the manufacturer...check their website or see if you can order a service and repair manual for them either from their site or a local computer shop...

My brother's NEC laptop was acting funny and I managed to find a downloadable pdf service manual for it that included complete disassembly and reassembly instructions, so you may be able to find some info...
