Unhappy msn messenger fail

whenever i try to sign in to messenger from my computer i get the message "make sure you are connected to the internet" .
I also have problems connecting to some chat rooms etc.
anyone have any ideas.....cheers folks

I assume internet explorer is working fine and you are connected when this happens. one thing to check, when that happens, is to go into an ms-dos prompt (under programs) and type in at the c:\ prompt "ping www.yahoo.com and hit enter. If it says anything other than reply from, your connection is not good, means you are either no longer connected (pick up phone to check) or else you just can't browse. If you just can't browse while connected, you should extract new winsock.dll and wsock32.dll file.

At this stage in the troubleshoot, we need to know which OS you are running, and if you have a windows 98 cd, or a restore disk.
