Post slow mail authorization in outlook express

outlook express is authorizing twice before letting me access my email account, and i don't know why. it never used to be like this but one day all of a sudden it changed. it says "verifying user name and password", waits 7 seconds, and then says "verifying user name and password" AGAIN and waits another full minute. this is not a tragedy in the larger scheme of things, but i do wonder what causes it and whether i can get it to just verify once and get on with it. does anybody know?

Hi jajm!

Do u mean that when u click "SEND AND RECEIVE" it verify ur name and password for 2 times?

Maybe u have 2 similar account for ur mail service, this is how u check: (for Outlook Express 5)

click "Tools" on the menu
choose "Account" and then "Mail" to check ur mail account
Hope this helps and God bless u!

hi, gidyeo-- you know, now that you mention it, i'm realizing it happens every time i dial a connection, whether i check my email right then or not. it's just that i almost always check my mail first thing when i dial up, so i associated it with a mail problem, but it happens even if i'm doing something else. once i'm connected, i can send/receive quickly, without the whole verification and reverification process happening. i do only have one mail account and only one isp. once i'm connected to the isp, it's not a problem. it's only the process of getting connected to THEM. i use outlook express and internet explorer and it happens either way. does this help anyone to figure out what's causing it? thanks for helping me to clarify the real source of the problem. :-)

Where is ReddDogg when ya need him?

Go through your settings in Dial up Networking and make sure everything's right, and check the Network icon in Control Panel, make sure everything's right there too. A call to your ISP's tech support might be in order, they'll have all the correct DNS numbers, necessary protocols, etc. Make sure you're only using TCP/IP, usually NetBUI and IPX/SPX are not needed. Find out if you need Windows Logon or Microsoft Family Logon.

That's about all I can think of, but I know more needs to be checked...just can't think of it all right now...

thanks, pete-- i have had no luck with my isp's tech support; they know less than i do, which is saying a lot, as you can tell from my posts here. i went and tried "windows logon" and "microsoft family logon" and it doesn't seem to make a difference which one i use, they both do the slow double verification deal. i'm using TCP/IP (although i don't know what it means) and see no evidence of NetBUI or IPX/SPX (whatever THEY are). i think this is going to just be something i live with, but thanks for trying! :-)

TCP/IP, NetBEUI and IPX/SPX are different Internet/Networking protocols. I can't give you a good description of them, maybe a search of the PC Guide would turn up something.

I can't get a thing out of the Microsoft Knowledge Database either, ran searches using a couple different keyword phrases, and got zilch.

Sorry I can't come up with more, but I'm out of ideas...

thanks for trying! i'm thinking it may actually be something on their end (the isp) rather than mine, because i do remember it started the day after they had a major system crash (they say a cable was cut; their entire network was out for 24 hours).when i asked them abt it they didn't seem interested in figuring it out. i'm looking forward to switching to a different service. then i'll know for sure.... :-)

Could well be on their end, we've checked everything I know of to check, and nothing seems to help...ISP's are good at that too, they don't like to admit they have a problem with their configuration and it causes you problems...but as long as they can still get your money...
