Question McAfee Anti virus/ System boot-up

I installed a trial version of McAfee VirusScan 5.12. When I boot-up it takes forever (20-30 min.) and my computer ran v e r y s l o w. So I uninstalled and now when I boot I get message that "a file is missing that may be required to run Windows. If I uninstalled a program on purpose try reinstalling or use programs unistall to recover file. C:\Progra~1\Mcafee\mcafee~2\safe&s~1\fbwin95.vxd. Press any key to continue."

Did that, and this message continues to appear. I tried McAfeehelp.com but could'nt get thru. Any suggestions

Did you run the uninstaller? You could try reinstalling it and uninstalling it again as recommended in this Microsoft link, or if you have Windows 98, run msconfig and deselect the command in the startup. If you have Windows 95, download Windows Startup Editor.

Yes I ran uninstaller. Also I tried reinstalling to no avail. I do run Windows 98 and tried msconfig and deseledted all commands that dealt with Mcafee, saved and restarted with the same result.
Oh, before I forget THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Well then, how about running sysedit and see if there is a reference to McAfee stuck in a file, maybe in autoexec.bat or system.ini. Try this Windows Trouble link for more info.

If it still plays hardball, try the Windows Startup Editor link. Backup your Registry first, since it says it can make changes there. I don't have much experience with that program, so be careful.

Hi, I've been sick and only now getting back.
Tried sysedit and no McAfee files there. Went to www.windowstrouble.com
link and tried what I thought was safe, but no restults different than your earlier suggestions. So I tried McAfeehelp.com again and got thru
to their help site (http://www.mcafeehelp.com/faq1.asp?docid=262) and followed their instructions for manually uninstalling (8 pages) via running registry editor. You're right that's a
dangerous place to be, but it worked!!!
THANKS AGAIN, I greatly appreciate your help and advice. I think PC-GUIDE.COM is the best place for novice PC users, like myself to go to
learn and get great results.
HAPPY COMPUTING,
WELDNUT
The error message is gone and start-up works fine now.
