A CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) error will occur when you try to run a file that did not finish downloading OR did not download correctly. A virus infection is also a possibility. CRC checks are performed to ensure the integrity of files. If it was a download, try downloading the installation file again. I have also had this happen to a file on a floppy that had worked before. Replacing the file is the only remedy I know of.

Thank you for your reply, Reid. I am still encountering the same problem after downloading the same progam a few times. This is happening to my ICQ download.
As for another program I downloaded, I got an illegal operation message and had to shut down even though I tried downloading a few times. I ran a virus scan on my system and no virus was detected. These are only 2 examples of programs I could not install. There are a few more programs when I tried installing them, I get many different kinds of error message. What could be wrong?

You might try downloading the files from a different source, unless they are already from a few different places. A search engine like Google should find another site if you search for the program's name. Paste in a couple of the URLs that you are trying to download from, in a reply, or e-mail them to me. Pick a couple of the smaller files.

I have seen posts in other places that say using GetRight for downloads helps reduce the chances of getting CRC errors.

Juliet attached a file that was giving the CRC errors when trying to install it. The McAfee virus scanner in Hotmail found that it had the "W95/spaces.1445 virus", and would not download it since it could not be cleaned. I sure didn't want it at that point anyway

I recommended that she install an anti-virus program. Computer Associates has a free download for personal use.

Here is the corrected link: Computer Associates free download.

The other link had an extra "http". This new link goes right to it, rather than requiring an extra click from the other link (if it had worked).
