another dsl problem

ok, my last post was about my dsl being too slow, got that fixed, now i have another problem, i m the guy living in the apartment complex that gets dsl free included with the rent, i just plug a wire into a ethernet card and it goes, i dont have a router or anything, i have an hp computer, with winxp and i have norton antivirus and norton firewall as well..now to the problem....my dsl seems to work VERY sporadically....it will work for a few hours then just stop working and my pages wont be displayed and it will start dialing my old dialup connection...i cancel the dial up and try to reload pages and nothing...just sits and tries to load and then cant load....i know dsl service can be interrupted periodically but this is nuts, i bet my dsl doesnt work about 25% of the time. ill leave for a few hours and come back and it works fine, then ill be surfing and its gone, take a break and it works again. sometimes it just stalls a min. other times its hours...Can anyone offer any suggestions or advice? i love dsl but its sooooooo annoying!

sounds like you may be actually networked through ICS to a central server and that machine must stay ON for anyone to get a connection to it.

as opposed to them just plugging you into an ethernet hub which would be MUCH better (for you and them both)

You might want to ask if your DSL is actually legal. If you are simply getting it as an unofficial bonus with your rent, it may explain why it comes and goes as the person who has the primary connection turns off their system. Free is nice, but it sounds like you may have strings attached.

most DSL providers don't care one bit about sharing the internet connection- each customer only gets a certain amount of bandwidth anyway.

the real question is how it is shared- they may not even know that turning off the server machine disconnects all the other ones connection.

In this case I think they would care... especially if the main account is a residential account. If all the boxes pull IP's from the ISP then I would expect them to say something.

so what do you guys think i should do??? i know the net is legal, its a large apartment company and they said they have a deal with the phone company to get dsl in all there places...i just dunno what to do...

If it is legit, you can talk to the apartment company and/or the DSL company about the problem. My DSL provider recently sent me a replacement modem because I kept getting dropped for no reason. As far as I can tell so far, they are not charging me for it. It could be that kind of problem or something that they can help you fix over the phone. You might want to call the apartment company first though, just in case it isn't as legit as they said it was.

i went and talked to the apartment company and they said our phone company is having MAJOR problems with the dsl. Something like they dont have enough bandwidth to handle all the new students so i will get "sporadic" service until/IF they fix this, oh but they assure me they are working on the problem LOL yeah right

not only is it LEGAL to share your bandwidth, they really don't care.

here's why;

the cable or dsl ISP basically rents you a certain amount of bandwidth. That's all you get- how you use it isn't important to them as you only get the amount you pay for - so any way you want to share or split that up is up to the individual.

you could create your own private wireless 802 network and supply internet to your entire nieghboorhood if you felt like it.
