Recently, after I failed at upgrading my PC to Win 2000 and re-installing Win 98, my internet connection has been hanging, not disconnecting, just stopping. I get connected without any problems, but while online, every few minutes, it will stop and do nothing for a minute or more (which feels like hours) and then it will go ahead and open whatever website I had asked for. Any ideas???

Let's say you are connected for a couple of hours, does it do this continuously or just during the first part of the seesion?
Have you checked all your software to see if any auto-update features are enabled (especially Task scheduler)? You can use sysmon, and set it up to monitor the dial up connection (use bytes up and bytes down) to see what if anything is going on suring these pauses. What programs are running in the background (use ctrl-alt-del once to bring up a list of what is running)? Are you using a firewall, like ZA?

No matter how long I am online, it continues to do it randomly every few minutes.
I don't like task scheduler and don't have it running or any other auto-updates that I can remember. I used sysmon as you suggested, it didn't take long for it to do it again. Results: there is no byte activity during the pauses. Running programs in the background: Explorer, Mxtask, Vptray, Systray, Rnaapp, and Hpztsb04. Not running a firewall. ![]() |
