Modem problem

My friends computer has an LT win modem, and it has been working. One of his friends used the internet and now the computer gives an error that the modem is already in use. He is running win95. I've uninstalled the modem and reinstalled (software not hardware). I havnt yet uninstalled the internet connection program though. Does anyone have any clue on what is wrong and how to fix it?

Thanks a bunch
...Joe

Have you run an antivirus scan, spyware scan and so on. Chances are good that the other friend hooked into something nasty and it is possible that your friend may even be accumulating some nasty long distance charges. If you don't already have them, mjc has a good list of scanning programs here:

Good luck,

A few causes here.

Try Ctl+Alt+Del and make a list of which programs are running may help in troubleshooting/tracking-down the offender.

Suggest installing a firewall like ZoneAlarm with respect to internet connections; though other apps like fax or phone-dialer may also be using your modem.

Also, does this happen if you boot into Safe Mode?
