Ms2000 Vpn

Hi your help would be greatly appreciated.
My mate and I are both on cable modems with static IP address. What I would like to do is link the tow of the via a VPN. The questions can this done without purchasing extra hardware. If we can how do you do it and what access cane we bith have to each other’s systems?
I’m running win2000 and he’s got XP installed. I’ve also got zonealarm installed at my end but he doesn’t have anything. Do I have to turn my firewall off or can I run the VPN through it?
I’m at a complete loss Help please!!
Thanks

Do you really need a VPN?

If what you're looking for is simple remote control and file transfer, your better off with pc-Anywhere and it's cheaper and easier to configure.

VPN comes with 2K and I suppose it is in XP too. Could be a learning process, if nothing else.
