what speed should I expect

I have a 56K Modem and I get a file download average of about 5-6 kps. Is this a normal speed? I've tried 2 ISPs with about the same results. The connection speed reads 57,600 bps.

I have a 400mhz k6-2 running win98 se.

Any tips on speeding up connection appreciated

Thanks

The connection speed of 57600 is wrong, that is not the speed your modem is connected to the internet at, but the speed of the port....and 5-6K for a 56k connection is about average.

Here in the Borders the average connection speed is in the region of 44,000 (I get 42,600) and download speeds of about 4K. This seems to be the normal figures for UK whilst usin 56K v90 modem

download speed

thanks for your replies, I also wonder why when a download is starting the speed is reported in the dialogue box as high as 18kps sometimes and why can't it stay like that for the whole file?

thanks again for your replies

I doubt if you get dynamic results; rather an average over the period of the download. First few milliseconds can easily be miscalculated I guess.
