telephone cable

Whenever I want to dial up I have to remove the telephone cable from the internal modem socket at the back of the pc and reinsert. It's a minor irritation but surely there is a simple fix for this?

A few more details please....

Like what brand of modem...

Are yiou sure the cable is plugged into the correct jack.......the onle labled Line?

I think it's a generic internal modem, perhaps a V90? The person I got the pc from didn't have to do this and all that has changed in the setup is the cable from the modem to the telephone socket. It is plugged into LINE though.

It's as if the connection between the modem and the cable is reset to 'dead' when the internet connection is lost or if the computer has just booted, and plugging it back in somehow makes it 'aware' (stop me if I'm getting too technical)

The only thing I can think of is the gain is too low on the telephone line, however this problem relates to when no phone signal is going between modem and telephone socket. Is there a basic signal (electrical or telephonic) when the modem is not connected to the phone line?

Try a new cable between the computer and the phone jack....

In addition to a new cable, I would try a shorter one if possible. Also, what happens with a phone plugged into the same jack? Have you tried the modem plugged into a different jack. You may have to look at replacing the jack.

I have had this problem before, it usually happened after the modem had been used or the system had tried to access it. I would have to remove the cable to reset the modem and close the line (as the port was left open and I couldnt dial out), is this what is happining to you?

My solution was to install the correct or updated drivers.
