Unhappy tapi.dll?

Hi all. It's nice to be here. I hope I can get some help for my problem, and, in the future, be able to help someone else.

I use Windows 95 (I know, ancient) and Internet Explorer 5.5. I use two ISPs to get online: Access4Less and MetConnect. I started having similar problems with both, so I don't think either is responsible for the problem.

For Access4Less I click on my IE desktop icon to get online. However, for the last few days when I do that I get: "Iexplore--An error has occurred in your program, etc." I then choose "Close", and I get "Iexplore--This program has performed an illegal operation, etc."
I choose "details" and get "Iexplore has caused an invalid page fault in module TAPI.DLL.

When I use MetConnect, I get similar error messages. But instead of "Iexplore" as above in the Access4Less problem, substitute "Cmmgr32" in its place.

Both times an invalid page fault is caused in TAPI.DLL. Can anyone tell me what's happening and how I can solve the problem? It doesn't happen 100% of the time, that's why I'm online now. But, it is happening 85% of the time and getting worse.

Thanks for considering my problem.

Ron

Hi. THIS is the MSKB for troubleshooting them in Win95.

They mostly arise from memory and resource problems. Try to have as few programs running as possible and delete your Temporary Internet Files for starters.

BTW how much RAM is installed, how much free disk space and how fast is your CPU?

Do you know if this had an .exe at the end or.hlp

The TAPI.dll can be extracted from your cd and replaced after that delete your dialup and then reinstall see if that stops it?

Thanks, Paul, for sending me to the Win95 troubleshooting page. It looks like I should be able to use one of those solutions. I appreciate your help.

Thanks to both Paul and Yoda again. You led me to the right solution, I think, but.......

The problem seems to be that I'm missing a file, Telephon.ini. It should be in my Windows/System folder, but is not. The instructions from Microsoft say to double click on Tapiini.exe file in Windows/Systems, which I do have, and Telephon.ini will be created. But, it didn't happen. I tried it several times with no results. There is no Telephon.ini on my computer anywhere.

Can you help any further? Can I get this file off my original Windows disk, and if so, how?

Thanks so much!

Ron

Think telephon.ini should be in the root of the Windows folder, whereas the file that creates it, tapiini.exe is in the Windows/System folder.

To create a new Telephon.ini file:

1. Rename the Telephon.ini file (if it exists) in the Windows folder to Telephon.old. For information about how to rename a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "renaming" (without quotation marks), and then double-click the "Renaming Files" topic.
2. Restart your computer.
3. Double-click the Tapiini.exe file in the Windows\System folder. Note that this program runs very quickly; nothing may appear to happen. If you are not sure, check the Windows folder to verify that a Telephon.ini file was created.

default Telephon.ini file for Windows 95 contains the following settings:

[Providers]
NumProviders=1
NextProviderID=2
ProviderID0=1
ProviderFilename0=UNIMDM.TSP
[Provider1]
NumLines=1
NumPhones=0
[HandoffPriorities]
RequestMakeCall=DIALER.EXE

Thanks again, Paul. It turns out, after a bit of trial and error, that the files you mention above were just not named exactly the same thing on my computer. Once I realized that, and found the files under their slightly different names, I was able to create a new telephon.ini file and my problems were solved. Everything is back to normal functioning. I just hope whatever damaged that ini file doesn't do it again. At least I'll know what to do next time.

Thanks for all your kind help.

Ron
