Win XP can appear like this if the video settings are incorrect - I've seen it on a laptop when booted into safe mode.
The first thing I'd try is connecting an external monitor, so that you can use the external monitor to reset the configuration for your laptop screen. (I'm assuming that this isn't something as simple as your battery being low and the laptop hibernating) You could try entering safe mode (F8 during bootup) and change the screen settings from there. The next thing I can think of is (within windows) working blind - that means performing the keystrokes and hoping you hit the right ones to change things - hopefully someone can come up with a better suggestion! OK, here is the sequence to change your resolution to 24 or 32bit, 1028*768 which should work for most LCD monitors.
Note that this was tried on my home pc using XP, but if all else fails, then you can give it a try. After you have logged on to windows: The sequence is: WINDOWS key C TAB (press 5 times) RETURN TAB (Press 5 times) Down arrow (press 3 times) RETURN Left Arrow (press 5 times) (this just ensures that the resolution is set to the lowest point) Right Arrow (press once) TAB (press once) Down arrow (press once) RETURN RETURN (Note that the RETURN key is just another name for the ENTER key) |

The C in the above will get you Search
at least if you are using the classic menus |

Yes, I shouldn't have assume everything was set to the XP defaults! This works if you are using XP under it's normal routine, and goes to the Control panel
