Question laptop password

My college going daughter forgot the password for her laptop (Dell Latitude) As far as I know it is a bios thing, how do I clear the bios or better yet get rid of the password.

It is assumed that we will lose what ever is on the harddrive. Oh, It is running XP

If it is the BIOS password I believe you have to reset the CMOS to eliminate it. The good news is that this will not effect the data on the hard drive at all. The bad news is that I don't know how to do that on a laptop, but someone else here probably does.

It is probably more likely that it is the Windoze password and I believe that can be disabled by deleting the password file in DOS, but I am not sure you can do that if the drive is formatted in NTFS.

Is your daughter able to boot and access the BIOS? If she can it is the Windoze password. If not, it is the BIOS password.

For a log on pass word you can delete the SAM file in your winnt\system32\config\ directory this will reset the administrator password ...(and delete all users as well ... be carfule!)

If this is a bios password you could try to bypass it with a back door password found here
