windows 2000 & USB mouse

Hi,
i am facing a peculiar problem with IBM R40 laptop.recently i installed windows 2000 professional onto it and it was working fine.since the user wasn't able to get accustomed to the onboard mouse(touchpad & trackball) we disabled it and gave an external USB mouse.for a day or two it worked fine.now during the windows 2000 splash screen it hangs a lot and only after 3 to 4 attempts of restarting it manually it boot and works.the mouse i am using is of INTEX brand.in the event viewer it shows "the mouse reset failed" & "A device attached to your system is not functioning".
could anyone please tell me what could be the problem and the solution for it.thanks in advance.

The problem is likely with your drivers, if you cant solve it by updating the drivers try using a different mouse and see if that works
