Hi,
I am a Web Devloper and I am looking to purchase a Notebook that will allow me to developed back-end, intranet & applications using Cold Fusion, Flash and SQL server database. Also I will like to download from a DVD cam, home videos for editing. Does anyone recommend a Notebook or specs that I should look for when buying a notebook? Is it a must to have a DVD burner as one of the periphals? Regards Guy |

Hello guym and welcome to
.Writing code does not require a great deal of computer horse power and I have done some pretty interesting stuff with Flash on a PIII 650. Just about anything you get off the shelf today should suit your needs. if you are not into the big name manufactures, check out Netlux. They have some decent prices for the closest thing I have seen to a custom laptop. As for the DVD burner, only if you intend to put movies or other info on DVD. You will at bare minimum want a DVD read/CDRW combo. Good luck

Is the MySQL Server your backend or is that another database altogether?
If your database(s) are going to be large and/or elaborate then get lots of RAM (say at least 512 to 1024 MB); you'll need that much if you install and want WinXP to sing in any case. MySQL Sever works fine under Win98 but much better to be running Win2K/XP or later. Accessing such Databases on older sytems and older operating systems is generally fine - but for more "zip" and particularly to increase boot up times when such servers are activated at start-up get yourself a "fast" cpu (say 1.5 to 2.0 MHz or Higher) and choose WinXP rather than Win2K.

How much time away from the office will there be?
If alot, I would get something that has Centrino technology. The battery life is longer. As for brands, especially if you travel, the warranty is important and for that reason I reccommend ACER, IBM and Toshiba for laptops. Happy hunting. |

Have only played around a little with MS-SQL - mostly migrating directly from MS-Access to try it out and not finding it all that superior and, I think, needing a Windows server to host it on.
I was talking about the open source MySQL which I have only fairly recently been seriously experimenting with - but with which I am mightily impressed - speed and efficiency-wise. Have used it as the backend for both PHP scripts running on IIS/PWS and for a MS-Access Front-End using it via MyODBC
