Unhappy DWL-G132 connects for 20sec then stops

I have a D-Link DI-624 wireless router at home that originally was hooked up to my WinXP PC by cable. It was all working well. Moved the computer to another room and bought a DWL-G132 network adaptor and am now trying to get it to work. When I connect it all goes well either with Windows control or using the D-Link software and recognises the AP etc. You can then browse the web for all of 20secs before it wont find any more web pages or do anything. It says it is still connected but no packets are being transmitted or received. Eventually it usually disconnects and then a re-scan of wireless networks finds nothing. Starting and stopping the Windows Zero Config wervice does nothing at this stage. If you unplug the adaptor and plug it back in then you are back where you started, connection for 20secs, blah blah blah. Signal strength is about 80%. Driver is version 1.20, revison is A2 for hardware

From scouring the web this kind of thing seems to be the fault of Windows Zero Configuration thingee taking over and trying to connect to another network and knocking you off but I'm not sure of that in this case.

Things I have tried
1) The adaptor works on my laptop fine sitting at the same distance as the computer is from the router either using WZC tool or the Dlink software
2) As I said the same problem occurs when using WZC or Dlink software. Also tried the Boingo wireless connection software with the same result.
3) I am broadcasting the SSID but it makes no difference
4) I have tried turning off all security and changing channels on the router and turning of Turbo with no effect.
5) No microwave going at the time and I tried unplugging the cordles phone but neither change anything. (the laptop works fine with it under all these conditions anyway)
6) Motherboard has all the latest drivers etc
7) Windows XP has SP2 so no issue with the updates required to get it to work as several websites say.
8) I have tried various drivers from the Taiwanese and USA D-Link sites but it all does nothing different apart from a few BSODs when uninstalling, re-installing all these drivers.
9) 802.11x security thing is not ticked as several websites suggest this is a problem for lost connection
9) Have turned off Antivirus, firewall, Skype, Gmail and any other thing I can find that connects to the internet. Still the same.

It seems to me there is still some other windows program or service knocking my connection off and generally not playing nice

Thanks for the help

Update

Tried an updated Windows Update driver (ver 1.5) ut still no change.

If I connect and not use a browser I can ping the AP for a long time with no drop outs. As soon as I use a browser it dies and you cant ping the AP anymore. Weird

If the same adapter works on the laptop connected to the AP and not on the PC connected to the AP - then it is a safe assumption it is the PC with a problem. But is very odd behaviour. It is a USB adaptor I take it? Try a different USB port. Try creating a new user on your PC and log in to it and check to see if the problem persists.

Tried reinstalling Win-XP + SP2 but no change. May have to try a complete fresh OS install and wipe everything although that is a little drastic yet

If you reinstalled the OS and it still doesn't work a fresh install shouldn't help. Reinstalling overwrites the registry.

Really odd problems like this can be hardware related. They could also caused by something you havn't mentioned yet. I doubt it is OS related if you reinstalled. Can you hook the problem PC up with a wired conenction to the ISP supplied router and surf without problems? Does it only have problems with the USB wireless card?

I had the computer originally wired to the AP and it was working fine.

I think what you say may be true and that it is a hardware or security setting. From another forum one guy said that the AP and wireless PC's will connect and then continue to try and re-aunthenticate with each other. When one of them fails it severs the connection. This supposedly can occur when the connection is not using any security.

I'll try updating the firmware on the AP and see if that changes anything.

Thanks for your help

Tried updating the router to latest firmware (4.03 from 4.01).

This reset everything back to basics so tried it out. Works fine still on my laptop with its inbuilt intel wireless chip but the desktop is still doing the same thing.

Also mucked around with different drivers for the D-link adaptor with the revised router driver but no luck.

Also turned off UPnP in router and on PC as someone elsewhere suggested that might do something. No luck.

If I disable the laptops inbuilt wireless chip and use the D-Link adaptor it works flawlessly first time with either WZC control or the D-link software sitting in the same place where the Desktop is.

The weird thing of all this is that it connects and you can surf flawlessly for anywhere between 5 and 30 sec and then it abruptly stops transmitting or receiving. You then have to remove and reinsert the adaptor for it to go again for another 20 sec. I am losing all hope ........ must go on .......... the end is nigh.......

Are you sure it is actually the wireless connection dropping and not the USB crapping out?

What other USB devices do you have connected to the machine?

Just to double check...go to Device Manager and look at the Properties for your Root Hub (s) => Power Management and UNCHECK 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.'

Set the USB hub power settings to not 'power off to save power'

The Advanced settings for the adaptor also had a power setting but it was already set to off for Power Save.

No other USB stuff connected permanently.

I tried a variety of USB ports as well (I have 6)

Still the same old same old.

Just tried the latest firmware for the DI-624 (4.04) but still no joy.

It has to be something on my desktop PC buggering the connection after 20 secs I think.

So far, we've eliminated the device itself, because it works on another machine.

A USB timeout/power down/other related problem...

At this point, though, what to check?

I havn't checked phases of the moon, local price of turnips, a butterfly flapping its wings in Paris or of course the involvement of extra-terrestrials but apart from those I have just about covered everything I can think of.

I may get a PCI card and try it instead but am releuctant to buy it just for the process to fail again

Don't forget to burn a few Cheetos in front of your monitor if you go with the PCI card (a libation of Mountain Dew is also said to help in cases like this).

Short of trying a fresh install of XP, I'm not sure what else to try...I guess you could remove everything to do with the device (try the removal in Safe Mode) and try again. A manual search of the registry after the removal may find a left over piece or three...remove them if found. Also make sure that it is totally removed from Network Connections...

I have an IBM laptop with XP Pro and am experiencing a similiar problem. I can surf the web directly wired to modem with no problem. However when I try in the wireless mode using USB adapter, can only stay connected about 30 seconds. Seems to work fne using the wireless adapter if in safe mode however.

Hey, im having the SAME problem as you.

Not only did the DWL-G132 not work on a desktop computer i was trying to install it on, but it doesnt work on my IBM T22 laptop either, it just locks it up after 1 minute or so. What a piece of **** D-Link churned out...my router DI-624 also craps out at random and keeps giving me the "Network cable disconnected" thing over and over.

Same Story Here... any solution

I have tried a new router. A new wireless card, same old problem.
I am beginning to think it may be a bug in the cable modem.

Any thoughts?

Do you still have a NIC in the problem machine? If so, just for kicks and giggles, you might want to pull it and see if the problem persists...

One other thought might be to check the events log and see if anything is showing up there.

Dell Latitude F510's use an Intel onboard wireless card. The
driver for the card loads a WLANKEEPER service that runs the irritating Intel
software. SO even though I tell Windows to manage the wireless card, the
Intel stuff kicks it offline........

Stopping the WLANKEEPER service and setting it to disabled allows me to
re-enable WZC and lets Windows manage my wireless world.

maybe this is the same for other manufacturers?

I'm having the same problem with my DWL-G132, except it looses the connection randomly, sometimes it'll work fine for a day, then disconnect every 5 minutes. Everything will be working fine, then all of a sudden it'll stop sending / receiving, then a short while later it looses the connection. There 3 wireless networks in range of me, and when it looses the connection, it can't see all 3. So I unplug the USB adapter, plug it back in, and all 3 show up again and it'll work fine for a while. I've also noticed that when it does this, if I try to put my system in stand-by it gives an error saying "Device D-Link DWL-G132 has prevented the system from entering stand-by." It has done this with multiple PC's and multiple O/S's. I've tried everything to fix this and haven't had any success. I'm pretty sure its just a problem D-Link overlooked.
