windows 98 and new daylight savings time

The new law says that Daylight Savings Time will start March 11, 2007 instead of April this year. With Microsoft Product Support ended for windows 98 will there be a way to modify the windows 98 Daylight Savings time transistion?

MY second computer (old) runs windows 98 SE. This will be a test for 3rd party support for windows 98 and older computers -- will the 3rd party software community rise to the challenge?

I suppose if it is not changed not too much harm will come. The lack of daylight savings time from March 11 to April may be a minor inconvenience. However my 98SE computer is networked so there may be some issues.

Don't worry about it...it is easy enough to manually change the time or you can use Atomic Time Sync to synchronize the time...

fix for windows 98 DST change

Unfortunately Microsoft does not support Win98 any more so there will be no "official" patch for the DST issue. You can however install the Windows 98 Resource Kit Tools from your Win 98 install CD (if you still have it). Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive, navigate to the \Tools\Reskit\ directory and run the "setup.exe" file from there. This will install the "Sample Tools" kit and put an entry into your Start>Programs>Windows 98 Resource Kit.
You have to use the Win98 version of the Time Zone Editor.

If you don't have your Win 98 CD, try to beg, borrow or steal one. Also there are some Win 98 versions of the tzedit.exe file on the net to download,

Open the Tools Management Consule and under "Configuration Tools" double click the "Time Zone Editor".

Click on your Time Zone (probably will be highlited)
Click on "Edit"

You can adjust your DST settings from here.

Set Start Date/Time for Second Sunday in March
Set End Date/Time for First Sunday in November

Click on OK and close your way out.

Or you can just adjust the time in Control Panel.... You are making it much more difficult than it needs to be...

That's actually a good tip BC, thanks. Is ME affected the same way?

I don't know about ME. Perhaps the ME CD has the "Yools/Reskit" option. At any rate the ME OS will be also affected by the DST change and MS is not going to provide a patch.
The same results of running TZEDIT can be obtained by editing the registry.
The following link explains how to do this:

Lightbulb Unofficial Win98 DST fix utility

I came across a website that has a utility (with the Pascal source code available for your inspection) to fix the 2007 Daylight Saving Time issue on Windows 98 computers.

Here is the URL to the page containing the pertinent links:
http://www.intelliadmin.com/Downloads.htm

The direct link to the Win98 DST fix utility is:
http://www.intelliadmin.com/DaylightSavingFix98.exe

Maybe these would be helpful to you. They also have a utility to fix the DST settings on Windows 2000 computers.

Thumbs up TZEDIT.EXE for Windows 98

I did some MORE web surfing and found a place from where the Windows98 version of TZEDIT.EXE may be downloaded from Microsoft, along with instructions for its use (in case you don't want to rely on an "unofficial" program but want to get the Microsoft utility and do the patch on your own). The URL to that discussion is: http://groups.google.com/group/micro...821d260?hl=en&

The actual Microsoft location from which the Windows 98 versions of TZEDIT.EXE, TZEDIT.HLP, and TZEDIT.CNT can be obtained via anonymous FTP is: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/tec...Reskit/CONFIG/

I tried going there yesterday and it took me a LONG time to download the files, mainly because the connection kept timing out. When I finally got them all together, I put them into a 7-zip archive including 1) a text file listing their names and file sizes, 2) a text file of the instructions found in the first URL I cited above, and 3) MD5 and SHA-1 hashes confirming the files as I originally placed them in that archive. I tested the TZEDIT.EXE utility on a Windows 98 pc and it works (unlike the newer versions of TZEDIT.EXE).

If you would like to download the 7-zip archive (and ITS confirming MD5 and/or SHA-1 hashes), please go to the following URL: http://www.arbornet.org/~ncweb/tz98/

I have the original Windows 98 which is older than dirt. In spite of the fact I know next to nothing about computer OS, I read this thread and figured out how to update my OS for the new DST. Once I loaded the start-up disk, the whole process took about 30-seconds.

After you have the CD loaded, go to your start-up menu and select FIND.

Click on FILES AND FOLDERS.

When the window appears, from the drop down menu select Windows 98 CD, (D).

In the search field type TOOLS.

Once you locate the TOOLS FOLDER, click on that.

Next, in the TOOLS FOLDER look for the RESKIT icon. Click on that.

Once you are in RESKIT click on CONFIG.

Once in CONFIG, look for the TXEDIT globe icon and click on that.

When the date/time set-up appears, look for the EDIT button and click on that.

At the bottom of the screen you will see settings for DST. Set up the DST START DATE for the second Sunday in March. Then, set the DST END DATE for the first Sunday in November.

Click on OK. When the edited screen appears check that. If okay, click on CLOSE.

And you're set!

Once you've edited your time zone(s) DST start date(s) and end date(s) with TZedit (as in starman47's note above -- thanks, starman47! ), there are still a few remaining steps to do. (The TZedit program itself changes one section of the registry to the new values for your edited time zone, but you must still do the following so that this change is applied to ANOTHER section of the registry which is necessary for everything to work properly.) Here they are (taken from the "WIN98 TZedit instructions.txt" file in the 7-zip archive I posted earlier (and also seen in the groups.google.com... link)):

----------------- (BEGIN quoted lines) -----------------
g) Click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel,
and then double-click Date/Time.
(h) Click the Time Zone tab.
(i) Select a different time zone than (the one you are set at),
and then click Apply.
(j) Click (back to the one you were set at), and then click OK.

"Note Steps i and j are required for the new changes to take effect",
the article says, as does TZEdit's own help screen.

------------------ (END quoted lines) ------------------

Billherb,
The update you posted worked, just at 2PM instead of 2AM. A slight coding error but it did work out.

Exclamation

Remember my earlier note above where I wrote the following?

I'm thinking of removing that 7-zip archive so it isn't taking up space unnecessarily. (I'm assuming anyone who needed the time zone modification program for Windows 98 would have obtained it by now.) I'll probably remove it by the end of this year and modify the link above. I just thought I'd let y'all know.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
