2025 promises to be an exciting year for AMD enthusiasts, with two new X3D CPUs on the way early this year. Just below the flagship 9950X3D, we have the Ryzen 9900X3D which has recently been announced at CES 2025. There were a good number of leaks and rumors leading up to the event, but we can now put that behind us thanks to official confirmation from AMD.

So, let’s discuss everything you need to know about the 9900X3D from the current release date window to the confirmed specs and estimated price. We say estimate for price because this is one important detail that was left out of AMD’s CES keynote.

Ryzen 9 9900X3D release date window

AMD has now announced the Ryzen 9 9900X3D processor and has confirmed it will be available in Q1 2025. An exact release date has yet to be revealed, though we should soon see when it will be available to buy once retailers begin to list it for sale.

However, a reliable AMD leaker, Hoang Anh Phu, has put out a rumor claiming that the 9900X3D will launch in late January. While the leaker didn’t mention the exact name of the CPU in their post on X, they referred to it as “12 C” (12-core processor), which lines up with the 9900X3D specs.

Do I need to upgrade my motherboard for Ryzen 9 9900X3D?

If you’re already using an AM5 motherboard, then no, you won’t need to upgrade. A BIOS update will suffice once the time comes to upgrade your CPU. If you’re instead using AM4, you’ll need to switch out your board for a newer model that supports the AM5 socket.

Just like they did with AM4, AMD plans on committing to socket longevity with the latest platform, so upgrading to the 9000 series is a good future-proof move.

Should I get the 9900X or wait for the 9900X3D?

Sitting just below the 9950X, the Ryzen 9 9900X is still a fantastic choice of CPU for multitasking. With 12 cores and 24 threads, it is a strong choice for productivity and gaming alike. On the other hand, if you already have an X3D model for gaming as a priority, you’re perhaps best off waiting for the 9900X3D to arrive.

Like we’ve seen from the Ryzen 7 9800X3D we’ve reviewed, the X3D chips in the 9000 series offer excellent gaming performance, and the high-end Ryzen 9 chips also bring forth additional value for productivity use cases.
