AMD Ryzen 9 9900X Desktop Processor

12-Core, 24-Thread, Unlocked Desktop Processor, based on AMD “Zen 5” architecture, 5.6 GHz Max Boost, 76 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support

Currently, the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X is available for a jaw-dropping price of $359, slashing $140 off its original $499 price tag. While $499 might be a bit of an inflated listing from Amazon—considering this CPU typically averages around $440—you’re still saving over $50 even at that price point. Pricing history shows that this discounted price matches its lowest-ever price, which has returned after a brief hike earlier this December.

We’re not going to claim that this is the best processor you can find, as there are a few drawbacks with the Ryzen 9 9900X. While it offers decent single-core performance improvements over previous-generation processors, it’s not enough to call it a revolutionary upgrade. Similarly, the multi-core performance falls short of the higher expectations you could had for it. That said, for creative professionals, the Ryzen 9 9900X does provide an impressive set of specifications that can handle productivity tasks with ease. However, for gamers, the performance leap isn’t particularly significant.

In our review of the Ryzen 9 9900X, we gave it a 3.5-star rating, noting that this processor “could have been much better.” We also mentioned that if we were designing this CPU, we’d lower the price by $40—and this deal does exactly that, and even more. For that reason alone, the Ryzen 9 9900X becomes a viable option, particularly for those building a workstation or productivity powerhouse, thanks to its strong single- and multi-core performance.

Is the Ryzen 9 9900X deal worth it?

The answer to that question depends entirely on your needs. As mentioned earlier, the Ryzen 9 9900X delivers strong performance for creative professionals, with credit where it’s due, its 12 multi-threaded cores help it excel in productivity tasks. This makes it a great choice for someone seeking a CPU primarily for productivity with some lightweight gaming on the side. And at its current discounted price, the Ryzen 9 9900X offers excellent value, saving you a significant amount. However, if you’re specifically looking for a gaming chip, this processor may fall short of the high standards set by AMD’s gaming-focused CPUs, such as the 7800X3D and several other options better suited for gaming.
