MSI SWORD 16 16″ FHD+ 144Hz Gaming Laptop

Intel Core i7-14650HX RTX 4060 16GBDDR5 1TB NVMe SSD Win 11 Home (Sword 16 HX B14VFKG-202US )

What we like about the MSI Sword 16 RTX 4060 laptop

RTX 4060 graphics card

The RTX 4060 laptop GPU is still a great option for FHD gaming and can handle most modern games at high settings. As with the 50-series, DLSS can be used to push this even further. While we haven’t reviewed or benchmarked an RTX 4060 laptop here in our testing labs, the Newegg benchmarks can give you a rough idea of what to expect in terms of FHD performance. According to the listing, it can get 60fps with Black Ops, 85fps with Modern Warfare 3, and 25fps with the much more graphically demanding Black Myth Wukong. While this card wouldn’t be our first choice for FHD, ultra settings, with Ray Tracing on, we think it’s a great option for those who play more competitive titles and prefer higher frame rates.

Intel Core i7-14650HX

The Intel Core i7-14650HX is an excellent mid-range CPU that’s impressive for both gaming and productivity. It boasts a hefty core and thread count of 16 and 24, with a fast boost clock speed of 5.2GHz, and a substantial 30MB L3 cache. Its TDP is 55W, which is on the higher end for a laptop CPU, so we’d expect this to generate a fair bit of heat when it’s being pushed. That being said, overall, this is the type of CPU that will complement more intensive gaming sessions and also be able to handle heavy-duty multitasking, too.

144Hz, 16-inch, FHD+ screen

Firstly, this screen wouldn’t be the one for you if you’re a professional creative, as it only has a 45% NTSC color gamut. But, for gaming and the RTX 4060 mobile, it’s pretty much ideal for the price. It’s FHD+, which is better than standard FHD and designed for 16:10 aspect ratios. Essentially, you’ve got more vertical space, which is great. Coming in at 16 inches, the picture quality should look sharp and clear, and you’ve got a decent 144Hz refresh rate, which can, theoretically, handle up to 144 frames per second. Overall, it’s a good choice for this laptop’s specs.

16GB of DDR5 RAM and WIFI 6E

What’s great to see here is that this laptop features DDR5 RAM and a decent amount of it for the price. This is going to keep everything running smoothly, especially if you’re running multiple applications, and it’s enough RAM to handle most game system requirements, too. It also features WIFI 6E, meaning you can access much higher internet speeds where available. Considering WIFI 7 isn’t super common, this is another smart choice that keeps the overall cost down and prevents you from paying a premium for something you may never use.

Who’s this deal for?

We’d say this is a great deal if you’re sticking to a budget of around $1000, but want to get something more mid-range, rather than a more budget-friendly RTX 4050 or RTX 3050 model, both of which can be found for under $800 in most cases. There are plenty of offers going on right now on RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 laptops, which will be even better for high settings, FHD gaming, and may be worth considering, too.
