What's the difference between NVMe and SATA SSDs?
NVMe SSDs use a faster PCIe interface and are significantly quicker than SATA drives. They're ideal for boot drives, gaming, or editing large files. SATA SSDs, while slower, are still much faster than traditional hard drives and are perfect for secondary storage or budget builds.
In short: NVMe is better for speed-sensitive tasks, while SATA is great for general use at a lower price. You can read more about this in our NVMe vs M.2 vs SATA guide.
How much SSD storage do I really need?
That depends on your use. For the best gaming SSDs and for general productivity where you’re not handling massive files, 1TB is a comfortable starting point. If you’re storing large game libraries, videos, or working with media files, 2TB or more is recommended. For simple everyday use, 500GB can suffice – just be mindful it can fill up fast.
Remember, it’s often more cost-effective to get one larger drive than to juggle multiple smaller ones.
Are external SSDs worth it?
Yes – external SSDs aka portable SSDs are great for fast backups, portable storage, or expanding space on consoles and laptops. They offer much better speed and durability than external hard drives. Just make sure you choose one with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt interface for optimal performance.
They’re especially handy for users who need to move large files between devices frequently, or for creating a quick and reliable game install drive.
