Seagate ST1000

We have a standout favourite when it comes to value with 87% off on the Seagate ST1000. However, it’s a 2.5-inch HDD a rather more specialised version than your standard 3.5 inch. So – make sure you’re only taking advantage of this incredible deal if you know your hardware fits the job.

Western Digital Red 10TB

We also think that the Western Digital Red 10TB offers great value at a third off with a gigantic amount of storage and lightning quick 7200RPM and 256MB Cache allowing you to transfer and access a huge amount of data rapidly.

Western Digital 2TB

If you’re not looking for something quite as hardcore as the WD Red – it’s little brother – the Western Digital 2TB Blue provides as good performance but comes in at $64.99 due to it’s smaller overall storage capability.

8TB Seagate Barracuda

We think that the 8TB Seagate Barracuda is another great option if you’re looking for storage on a budget with 8TBs on offer for $109.99. It’s not quite as fast at transferring as the Western Digital HDDs but at 5400RPM it can still handle the majority of tasks very well.

Seagate Portable 4TB

If you’re looking for an external hard drive to transfer data from different devices quickly and reliably. The Seagate Portable 4TB will do what you need for a great price of just over $105.99. With USB 3.0 supported you can transfer your data quickly and easily with plug-and-play functionality.

What PC Guide looks for in an HDD deal

When working out the value in an HDD the key is price-per-gigabyte. It’s pretty easy to work out dividing the products price by the amount of gigabytes available. Of the deals we found the 8TB Seagate Barracuda steals the show with an incredibly low $0.013 per gigabyte.

RPM

However, it’s not just a storage game – looking for a high RPM is also a big factor in weighing up the quality of a HDD this is how quickly the HDD can load or transfer data. The highest RPMs for HDDs can be up to 15,000 but consumer-grade HDDs typically range between 5400 – 7200 RPM the Western Digital HDDs both have 7200RPM.

Cache size

Another crucial thing to look for is an HDDs cache size – this is the amount of data that can be stored on the HDD that is remembered and accessed instantly it improves your computer’s performance at loading up commonly used apps.

Why choose an HDD over a SSD

We like HDDs a lot as they provide an excellent amount of storage for their price. SSDs outperform HDDs in efficiency and performance when accessing data but HDDs are still the king if you need to store things cheaply. Thus, searching for deals on an HDD just makes sense when going for the more budget-conscious option maximising your dollar to GB ratio. This is the time of year to be looking for great deals on HDDs as retailers look to get ride of their stock ready for the new yea
