AMD’s Ryzen 9 9900X isn’t the most powerful 9000-series CPU, but it’s not far off. And the 12-core, 24-thread processor is a great option when multi-core performance and workhorse-like steadfastness beat heavy workloads. Should you be in a position where you need more of that type of thing, Amazon’s current price offers a savvy saving. The 9900X is currently at its second-lowest price ever on the retail site and its lowest in two months at $329.

Why we like the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X

Productivity focus

You’re likely not buying a Ryzen 9 9900X for gaming, or solely for gaming, because while it’s an all-rounder, it’s primarily engineered for multi-core workloads and tasks like encoding, compiling, and rendering. Its 12-core, 24-thread configuration is only bested by the Ryzen 9 9950 variants, but its single-core performance shows solid generational uplift.

Power-efficient

If power efficiency is key to your needs, then the 9900X can serve you well. Indeed, it was perhaps a little too restrained in its performance at launch due to its efficiency. However, times and BIOSes have changed, and costs have shifted, too. So the value of the 9900X and its solid power-efficient (BIOS update-boosted) performance is in a good spot.

Socket AM5

While it’s true you probably won’t want to upgrade to another 9000 Series CPU (unless you go for pure gaming with an X3D option), Socket AM5 will go beyond the current generation of AMD processors. So, although you may be on your second AM5 upgrade with the 9900X, there’s more to come from the platform.

What to consider before you buy

As mentioned above, the 9900X is really a gaming-focused CPU despite its well-rounded capabilities and solid single-core performance. Still, you can’t save money by opting for the best CPU for gaming (Ryzen 7 9800X3D) as it’s currently more expensive. So, the question becomes, do you need the multi-core performance that the 9900X can provide? If not, you could opt for the far more affordable Ryzen 7 9700X and save around $30.
