If you’re thinking of enjoying the maximum out of your games with a forward-looking solution then the RTX 4080 Super is the top choice to go for. Coming out in January 2024, it was a late addition to the Ada lineup, but a more than welcome one. Considering it dropped the price of the expensive 4080 by $200, it at least brought a bit more value from the model.

Especially as it is a step down from the 4090, which is even more expensive, but still holds plenty of performance for it. Especially if you’re looking to run high resolutions such as 4k, the high specs of the GPU make it a rather appealing choice whilst still not having to go for the flagship. Being on the architecture it is, does also brings with it plenty of features and improvements that make it a long-term choice.

With it containing frame generation technology, it does hold DLSS 3 capabilities, allowing it to boost its performance in the games that include it. Also, it’s a strong performer for any ray tracing, as Nvidia GPUs tend to be, allowing it to make the best out of the game considering its implementation. It’s also likely why Nvidia is holding a promotion to include Star Wars Outlaws with sales of some 40 series cards.

It is also the recommendation for playing the game at the highest settings, according to the Outlaws system requirements. That is the supposed 4k 60FPS and ultra but still requires the use of a more upscale, even if it’s just the first setting. But that just seems to be the case for games these days as the best GPU for Black Myth: Wukong requires a similar sort of power to get a good performance.

Either way, the RTX 4080 Super brings with it the AD103-400 chip, with 10,240 CUDA cores, 80 RT cores, with 16GB of GDDR6X memory that comes with a bandwidth of 736GB/s. It’s a powerful machine that requires 320W of power as well with a power supply recommendation of 750W. So you’ll need to have a good setup all around for a well-built-out system plus you can find out what we think of it in our full 4080 Super review.

Performance

We put the game to the test with the GPU to see how it performs. Although the model we had on hand was the MSI Suprim X RTX 4080 Super, it’s not exactly the same as the one we reviewed but the base spec will be the same. The only difference comes with a boost clock of around 100MHz which might offer a couple of FPS differences but nothing too significant compared to the base 4080 Super capabilities.

We then ran around the world testing the framerate across different resolutions and a variety of ray tracing and DLSS. As you can see from our results in the graph, it can be a rather taxing game. To be fair this is with the Ultra preset both for ray tracing and pure rasterisation. Where you can get a stable 60 FPS for 1440p without ray tracing, and only really 1080p for RT.

But by turning on DLSS and frame generation, there is plenty of performance to be had. We opted for a biased and balanced option, so DLSS 3 boosted the game into running ray tracing at a more acceptable framerate. It doesn’t have to be pumped all the way down and destroy your quality too much but it does give it a good kick above standard. So its definitely worth tinkering with the settings to find the ones that suit you best.

GPU requirements for Star Wars Outlaws

As Ubisoft posted on the Outlaws page, the graphics card requirements span quite a range of models and capabilities. That way you can adjust your build to suit your requirements. Especially if you’re after lower resolutions and budgets, it might be more cost-effective to go for the recommended requirements rather than the ultra ones.

Requirement levelGPUResolution and performance
MinimumGTX 1660/RX 5600 XT/Arc A7501080p/30 FPS – Low preset, upscaler at quality
RecommendedRTX 3060 Ti/RX 6700 XT1080p/60FPS – High preset, upscaler at quality
HighRTX 4070/RX 6800 XT1440p/60FPS – High preset, upscaler at quality
UltraRTX 4080/RX 7900 XTX4K/60FPS – Ultra preset, upscaler at qaulity

There are also the rest of the requirements you need to consider of course. Even those aren’t anything too easy, as even at a minimum you need 16GB of RAM, along with an Intel i7 8th Gen of Ryzen 5 3000 series CPU. That combines to be a rather modern and powerful system in general. At least it doesn’t require most of your SSD space, as it only needs 65GB of storage. So if you have all that already and are not too sure about the 4080 Super, here are the alternative choices.

Alternative choices

Starting off with an option just a couple of tiers down from the 80 series, with the RTX 4070 Super. Which does drop down hundreds of dollars in price and makes it a bit more affordable. But the drop in specs does bring it down to the settings achieved by the card. The 4070 apparently is capable of 1440p 60FPS on a high preset.

There is also the option of an AMD graphics card instead. Where you may be interested in Team Red’s offering instead, in that case, the RX 7900 XTX is the option to go for. Leading up the RDNA 3 lineup, it has the best performance that’s on offer, which does put it on par with around the 4080 level from Nvidia, although lacking the ray tracing performance, it still is likely capable of Ultra settings as well.

On the other hand, you may want to consider a more budget-friendly graphics card. That’s where the RTX 4060 comes in handy for getting a strong performance on the more budget level. But more capable of reaching the recommended option of just 1080p and 60 FPS with a high preset, it does keep things on the down low. Especially if you don’t need anything more without a higher-resolution monitor.

Final word

There is a range of graphics cards to best suit Star Wars Outlaws. Of course, if you’re going for something capable of the best graphics and 4k performance then the 4080 Super is required. But there is still a range of options for you if you don’t require the much higher capabilities and instead get to pay a lower price. Either way, we’ll be sure to update this page after the game comes out with the performance.
