Now that November’s upon us, knowing where to buy RTX 4080 is essential for anyone after the high-end Ada video card.

We’ve been tracking GPU launches for years and have employed all our expertise to arm you with all you need to know from which retailers we’re expecting stock from, to the tech specs, price, and release date. The good news is that there are a ton of Black Friday deals – where you can save a ton of cash on the Nvidia 4080.

It’s been a turbulent time for the RTX 40 series, as getting your hands on RTX 4080 stock will come a little pricier than first anticipated. This is because Nvidia ‘unlaunched’ the RTX 4080 12GB. So this means it’s just the 16GB variant now on offer. We’re bringing you everything we know below.

RTX 4080 release date

The RTX 4080 launched onn November 16. The only iteration of the card to debut will be the 16GB model, as the 12GB version was canceled by team green – seemingly after consumer feedback.

It’s possible the now-scrapped card could become the RTX 4070 Ti as it would carry a cheaper price, and plug a price and performance gap below the RTX 4080. Reports suggest this card could launch at CES 2023.

This is based upon the GPU maker’s claim that: “The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it’s not named right.”

RTX 4080 price

The RTX 4080 carries an MSRP of $1,199 which is on par with the launch price of the RTX 3080 Ti from last year. The now-shelved RTX 4080 12GB model would have sold for $899 by comparison.

The 4080 is $400 cheaper than the top-end Ada model though, and will likely deliver a better than even RTX 3090 Ti level of in-game performance at the upper crust of the spectrum.

If we compare the RTX 4080 to its Ampere equivalent, the RTX 3080, you’re paying double the MSRP. This isn’t entirely shocking in all honesty, as it was heavily rumored that Ada cards would run more expensive.

As to whether the latest GPUs are worth the price hike remains to be seen. The RTX 4090 was just $100 more than the RTX 3090, and not $500 more as is the case here. And let’s not forget the AMD RDNA3 RX 7900 cards, which will undercut all the 40-series cards.

Back to the 4080 though, and price-wise, things become more complicated when analyzing the rumored price points for the upcoming card in the UK.

RTX 4080 performance

A total of three games were demonstrated at 2160p (4K) with the RTX 4080 according to official Nvidia benchmarks; Plague Tale: Requiem, F1 2022, and Microsoft Flight Simulator. We’ve chosen to focus on the latter as it is the most graphically demanding of the trio. As you can see, the 16GB variant averages just under 60 FPS natively, but that more than doubles with DLSS 3’s Performance mode.

Things get most interesting when comparing the two top-end Ada cards against themselves. According to this chart, there is around a 12.12% percent difference in performance power between the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090. That’s native performance, though, as things are almost identical with the A.I. supersampling – a mere 3.4% difference using DLSS 3, so things are close.

From this, we can see that the RTX 4080 appears to very much achieve its goal of true 4K gaming at higher frame rates. It remains to be seen what the real-world performance will be like, but we’ll be updating you with all we know as soon as the top-end video card debuts later this month.

RTX 4000 series cards

While both the high-end Ada cards have been officially unveiled, it’s all quiet on the RTX 4070 front. Nothing has come from the mid-range Ada hardware just yet, but the news is good for those after the higher-end.

Why was the RTX 4080 12GB canceled?

No official reason was given by Nvidia other than ‘it’s not named right’. Our speculation is that the company could be planning to release this model as the RTX 4070 instead. It would make sense given the reduction in price and performance, and help to round out the series post-launch. However, it’s unlikely that we’ll see a third Ada card until at least early 2023.

Is the RTX 4080 worth it?

It’s highly likely that the RTX 4080 will become the most sought-after of the Ada line. This was the case with the RTX 3080 before it as the price-to-performance ratio was most competitive. With that said, we’re seeing a price hike of nearly 50% here between generations, so people may wait for the RTX 4070 instead. It remains to be seen.

How Many slots is the RTX 4080?

The RTX 4080 is a three-slot design, although the actual dimensions of the cards will depend on individual partners and their own coolers. The RTX 4090 is also a three-slot design, so you may need to consider a new case for either card.
