A Korean PC shop has provided an interesting insight into some of its hardware split for sold computers between May and July. Utilizing Google Translate to get the page into English, we read the post of Palm (or less likely Farm as translated further down) PC shop post on the Quasar Zone forum (via Harukaze5719 on X). Where along with the graph below, details the most popular CPUs that went into its gaming PCs over that time with the sales volume outlined for each (beware the exponential X-axis scaling).

In that breakdown, AMD is shockingly holding the top 5 spots for the most popular choices. The 7800X3D leads with a whopping 1,061 units sold in those three months, with the next in line being the 7500F at 741 PCs. The third in line is the 5600 with 292 units, the fourth is the 7950X3D with 175, and the fifth is the 7900 with 136. It’s only in the sixth place that Intel processors even show up as the 12400F gets there with 96 units, but the 14700K next is only one sale behind. Even then AMD’s 5600G is only another two units behind. All of which is still far behind the leader anyway and shows the lead Team Red has, at least in this case for one Korean PC seller.

The reasons for AMD’s lead

In the post, the shop did outline some of the reasons they believe AMD is leading the pack in popularity. Saying even though there were price fluctuations for the 7800X3D the cost around that system was lower in general. Thanks to the low 120W TDP and yet excellent gaming performance, it only requires a dual-tower air cooler to keep it from throttling and performing as it should.

Whereas, a comparable Intel i9-13900KS in gaming performance requires a lot more to keep it running at its best. Although it has a 150W TDP, the PL1 jumps to 253W, and so certainly requires a lot more cooling with the likes of a liquid cooler, raising the price significantly over a simple air cooler. Plus the motherboard and other components to match it in the configurator raise the price much more than compared to the 7800X3D, a much cheaper option, certainly at this retailer anyway.

That is the same reason for the next CPUs in the list have seemingly been chosen. As the more budget AMD CPUs also utilize single tower cooling and have a cheaper platform supposedly. While the top-end 7900 and 7950X3D are the same reason for the top choice but with a bit better productivity performance.

Of course, this is unlikely to be the case in all the markets and Intel might be the primary choice elsewhere. But amidst Intel’s struggles and bashing on their CPUs, it might not be a popular choice anymore. Although this data comes as that was really setting off but doesn’t even include the Ryzen 9000 series release just recently and might see those come into use. Except without the X3D CPUs initially released they might not be as popular.
