Last month, there was some online speculation about AMD releasing a Radeon RX 7800M GPU that would power handheld devices or at least another RDNA 3 card. And then, we saw OneXGPU 2 equipped with the rumored AMD graphics card, which added some credibility to the rumor.
Despite this, AMD did not put out an official confirmation about this graphics card or even showcase any marketing material. Instead, it looks like AMD rolled out this GPU rather silently, as it just appeared on the site. Interestingly enough, it comes just as the PS5 Pro was announced and features the same number of Compute Units (60).
Radeon RX 7800M GPU becomes the newest addition to RDNA 3 family
As seen on AMD’s official website, the Radeon RX 7800M GPU has launched. This GPU is the latest addition to AMD’s RDNA 3 family, and it is geared towards high-end gaming laptops as well as other devices.
Specification | 7800M GPU |
---|---|
Compute Units | 60 |
Game Frequency | 2145 MHz |
Peak Texture Fill-Rate | Up to 560.4 GT/s |
Peak Half Precision Compute Performance | 71.73 TFLOPs |
Peak Single Precision Compute Performance | 35.87 TFLOPs |
ROPs | 96 |
Stream Processors | 3840 |
Transistor Count | 28.1 B |
GPU Power | Up to 180W |
AMD’s website has also listed the specifications for the GPU, which we think are looking great so far. As mentioned earlier, the GPU is based on RDNA 3 GPU architecture and is built on the 5nm Navi 32 die.
The chip comes with 3840 stream processors, 60 Compute Units, and 30 WGPs. As far as clock speeds are concerned, the GPU delivers a maximum game frequency of 2145 MHz. Further, the Radeon RX 7800M comes with a 192-bit memory bus and 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM. As far as TDP goes, the official specs say that this mobile GPU will consume about 180W.
Compared to the Radeon RX 7800XT, this GPU certainly lags slightly behind. However, it should be noted that RX 7800M is a mobile graphics card aimed at laptops, and RX 7800XT is meant for desktops.
Considering that AMD did not go for a loud launch of this GPU, it is possible that this graphics card will be used in selected products, like the OneXGPU 2, which is a portable, external GPU. So far, no other products featuring this graphics card have been announced.
