The original Apple Vision Pro didn't exactly get a standing ovation when it came to sales, as the jaw-dropping $3,499 price tag was hard to justify for a headset with such limited use cases. In fact, when it first launched, it came with a pretty thin list of compatible apps and lacked support for major platforms like YouTube.
However, in recent weeks, there’s been growing chatter about a successor that could potentially draw more interest. According to an Apple insider, CEO Tim Cook is reportedly very keen on developing an AR headset that is light and comfortable enough to wear all day. Following that, a new Apple Vision Air mockup has surfaced on X, claiming it “weighs a lot less and will be very thin,” possibly hinting that Apple is trying to catch the attention of Quest 3 or Pico users.
No Pro moniker this time, perhaps
According to leaker Kosutami on X, the next AR headset in the Vision Pro lineup is expected to be “so thin” and feature titanium to help reduce weight, including in the connectors and battery. They claim that only a few internal structures will use titanium for weight savings, while most of the exterior will still be made of aluminum and feature a midnight black-like finish. The leaker also added that this mystery headset will come in a color similar to the iPhone 5 era black and may drop the Pro for “Air.”
However, going for a lighter headset won't be the only factor that sways buyers. Apple will also need to price it right, more specifically, make it cheaper. We don't yet know how much of a price cut to expect due to these leaked design changes, but there's hope that Apple is planning a significant drop, especially since it wants to compete with other budget VR headsets like the Meta Quest 3S, which currently retails for $299.
