ASUS TUF Gaming 27” 1440P HDR Monitor (VG27AQ3A)

QHD (2560 x 1440), 180Hz, 1ms, Fast IPS, 130% sRGB, Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync, Speakers, Freesync Premium, G-SYNC Compatible, HDMI, DisplayPort

Key features of this ASUS TUF Gaming Monitor

27-inch, QHD display

A monitor that is 27 inches is ideal for several reasons. First up, it makes 1440p look crisp and sharp, meaning you don’t need to buy an expensive 4K-ready gaming PC and monitor for the privilege. It’s also perfectly sized for competitive gaming, productivity, and general usage, and you get a lot more in terms of quality for your money compared to larger 32-inch models.

180Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, and ELMB Sync

This monitor has a high enough refresh rate to allow for up to 180fps gaming, and a low response time to reduce motion blur and ghosting. On top of that, ASUS also has its own technology, ELMB Sync, which further eliminates ghosting and screen tearing. This is designed with competitive gaming in mind, and makes it much easier to track movement (or opponents) on-screen, even at high framerates.

FreeSync Premium and G-Sync compatibility

For a budget-oriented monitor, having FreeSync Premium is actually a big win, as it dramatically reduces stutter and screen tearing. The same goes for its G-Sync compatibility, although this is pretty standard.

HDR 10 support

This is good to have, although it’s basically the minimum when it comes to HDR performance. It means that the monitor can accept an HDR signal and do ‘something’ with it, but monitors with higher contrast ratios, wide color ranges, and higher peak brightness can do much more. It’s not a huge deal considering the price, but for super inky blacks and bright whites, you’ll need to up your budget OLED levels.

130% sRGB color

If this sounds weird and confusing, it’s because it is. What this means is that this monitor can cover 30% more than the sRGB color range. Generally speaking, the higher the percentage coverage of sRGB, the more vibrant and saturated the images become. This is great for gaming, where they tend to benefit from looking a bit more colorful, but for other content, it can look a bit oversaturated. It does mean that its color range stretches into DCI-P3, which is good for video editor,s as this is the space they will be color grading and working in.

Things to consider

While there’s no doubt this is a great monitor for the price, it ticks more competitive gaming boxes than it does outright picture quality. If you’re someone who prefers slower-paced, more immersive gaming, which benefits from better contrast, color, and brightness, we’d recommend exploring mini-LED monitors instead. These are not that much more expensive, especially if you go for budget-oriented brands like Innocn, and they will deliver much brighter, more lifelike picture quality than your standard LED displays, like this one.
