If your PC or handheld can't handle the new DOOM: The Dark Ages, don't worry – you're not alone. The latest DOOM is demanding if you’re working with an outdated rig, and not everyone has the hardware to run it smoothly. That being said, GeForce Now is a good alternative (we’ve been playing The Dark Ages on our Steam Deck with it), but we digress.

Anyway, the good news is that you can still enjoy a similar action-packed experience with Project Warlock II, a retro-style shooter that brings back the fast-paced chaos of classic games like Quake and DOOM 64. Now affectionately called ‘boomer shooters’.

What does Project Warlock II offer?

Project Warlock II is a sequel that builds on everything fans loved about the first game. It features intense combat, powerful weapons, fast movement, and a unique mix of 2D sprites and 3D environments. The game focuses on three characters, Palmer, Urd, and Kirsten, each with their own campaign, playstyle, and story. Every character comes with different weapons, magic spells, and perks, which means the gameplay stays fresh and exciting no matter who you choose.

Palmer uses fire, ice, and dual guns to blast through demons. Urd fights with magic-infused weapons and spells to control the battlefield. Kirsten takes things to the next level with heat-based weapons, summoning magic, and some tools like the Lava Streamer and Demonic Claws. Together, these three campaigns offer a huge variety of combat and challenges.

The levels in Project Warlock II are bigger and more vertical than before. There are 36 detailed maps across three chapters, with each chapter having 12 large, layered levels. Whether you're jumping across platforms, climbing tall towers, or exploring creepy halls, there's always something new to see and fight. The game also features a great progression system. You collect points during levels and use them to upgrade your character's stats, spells, and weapons. There's also a hub area where you can make these upgrades, just like the Workshop in the original game.
