ChatGPT’s new group chat feature is rolling out in four regions, and you don’t have to pay for it

An interesting new feature has started rolling out to ChatGPT – group chats. It’s exactly what it sounds like; multiple people can now talk with ChatGPT in the same conversation, which OpenAI says “makes it easy for people to collaborate” while getting the AI chatbot involved, too.
The feature is available to all logged-in users, so it’s not locked behind a paywall. Anyone can collaborate, whether you’re on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, or Pro. The only catch is that it is limited to a select number of regions right now, though more are expected to be supported in the future. OpenAI calls the release a “pilot” and plans to do more with shared experiences in ChatGPT.
Group chats in ChatGPT
A recent blog post from OpenAI explains how it all works. OpenAI suggests that this is a useful feature for making plans, drafting documents with coworkers, or just summarizing and organizing information. An important detail is that group chats are always separate from your private conversations, ensuring that your personal ChatGPT memory is not being shared. So far, the feature is available in four countries, as follows:
- Japan
- New Zealand
- South Korea
- Taiwan

Starting a group chat with ChatGPT is simple. All you have to do is tap the ‘people’ icon in the top right corner or any new or existing chat and tap ‘Start group chat’. You can then share an invite link with others to add them to the conversation. Setting up a group chat for the first time will prompt you to set up a small profile consisting of your name, username, and a photo.
If your circle of friends actively use ChatGPT, or at least own accounts, you may see this as a replacement for your other chosen platforms for group chats, whether that be Messenger, WhatsApp, Discord, or anything else. Microsoft already allows for its Copilot chatbot to be used in Microsoft Teams chats and channels, so this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this feature being done.
