ChatGPT suggested 8 improvements for the Pocket Nova and one dream upgrade
Table of Contents
The Retroid Pocket Nova retro handheld launched last week, with two distinct models available: an 8GB and a 12GB. The Pocket Nova is a 4:3 handheld and, by all accounts, looks like a solid device for enjoying compatible Android and PC games and emulation, too. But could it be improved? That’s the question we posed to ChatGPT, and it had eight compelling upgrade options, plus one dream upgrade.
1. 1080p OLED display (90–120 Hz)
The Pocket Nova’s display has a 4.5-inch AMOLED (960p@120Hz), so ChatGPT’s consideration that a Full HD 1080p OLED would be an upgrade is a little uncertain. Sure, that would offer a better resolution, and a variable refresh rate is cool and all, but resolution is not a huge concern given the 4.5-inch screen size. More importantly, AMOLED is a more efficient technology for power usage with handheld devices. We’re not completely sold.
2. User-replaceable battery
It’s hard to argue with this idea. ChatGPT suggests, “A battery secured with screws and a connector instead of glue. Easy replacement after years of use. Option to carry spare batteries.” We’re never going to be against (easily) replaceable batteries where they make sense. Honestly, this kind of accessibility breathes more life into all sorts of devices, so this would be a win for us. But it won’t happen, sadly, will it.

3. Hall-effect everything
The Pocket Nova already has at least Hall-effect thumbsticks, but ChatGPT wants Hall-effect on everything. Magnet magic across the device would be good, because why not? Yes, it would undoubtedly add to design complexity, but it would also mean that buttons and triggers could last lots longer due to lower wear. Absolutely, we agree. Who wants to tell Retroid?
4. Dual USB-C ports
The Pocket Nova does indeed have a USB-C port for fast charging, video out, and data transfer. Why not two? Perhaps due to cost and board restrictions that allow the (already hiked) price to be lower. Would two be better, allowing for accessories and docking/charging? Undoubtedly. No notes.
5. Programmable rear buttons
The current configuration of the Pocket Nova includes L2 and R2 triggers, so ChatGPT’s suggestion of two more would certainly add more functionality. And ChatGPT was convinced they should be mappable to any input, including profiles for different games. More options are usually good, but we can’t help but wonder whether this would be overengineered.
6. Improved Docking Mode
To quote ChatGPT directly, along with dual USB-C ports, it suggests: “One-cable USB-C connection for HDMI output, Charging, USB peripherals, Ethernet (through the dock)”. This would leave the other USB-C port for any of these that were also needed – say, charging while outputting to HDMI. We’re certainly on board with organized docking, and the AI tool’s note about an “Automatic switch to a TV-friendly interface”. That would be excellent, right?
7. Modular controls
While the Pocket Nova does have DIY, replaceable buttons, in ChatGPT’s notes this would be improved. Fully modular controls, incorporating “replaceable thumbsticks without soldering, swappable D-pad styles (cross, disc, segmented), easily replaceable buttons and trigger modules”, would make a lot of people happy, we’re sure. Modular always feels like a dream scenario – mainly because few devices ever seem to achieve it.
8. Built-in game library management
We’re handing over to ChatGPT to explain: “Because it runs Android 13, users can install frontends like Daijisho or ES-DE for artwork and organisation. However, features such as integrated cloud save syncing, battery health monitoring, and system-wide ROM management are not built into the device itself.” ChatGPT further offers these points as bonuses:
- Automatic artwork downloads.
- Storage cleanup tools.
- Per-game performance profiles.
The dream Pocket Nova upgrade
The final dream upgrade for the Retroid Pocket Nova? A modular expansion system. Not content with the suggestion of fully modular buttons and controls, ChatGPT’s response offers: “A high-speed connector on the back could support optional accessories such as”:
- An extended battery pack.
- A clip-on keyboard.
- A larger ergonomic grip.
- An SSD storage module.
- A camera or streaming module.
- A cooling module for sustained performance.
This would be a standing ovation upgrade. Retroid may (or may not) consider these going forward. But it’s a good reminder that every time a handheld device is released, manufacturers are making cost-based engineering and design decisions. Overall, ChatGPT’s upgrade options will likely never come to pass. Still, they’re fun to think and dream about while gaming and enjoying the Pocket Nova as it is.
