Chinese brand take one step closer to 1,000Hz gaming with latest OLED monitor

A Chinese brand has recently teased a new OLED gaming monitor featuring an impressive 720Hz refresh rate for competitive gaming.
SDC, Super Display Company, is the latest brand to join the unofficial race for 1,000Hz refresh rate gaming with their latest display – the Flash 540 Meta (loosely translated). The OLED-based panel, which is currently a prototype, will launch with a 540Hz refresh rate when in its native 2K display resolution. That said, according to the specs sheet, the panel looks set to feature a ‘special mode’ that boosts the refresh to an impressive 720Hz – superseeding many of the recently announced 500Hz QD-OLED panels we saw at this year’s Computex.
The display will be based on LG Display’s 4th Gen OLED panel, featuring a 2560 x 1440p resolution and Primary RGB Tandem Technology – a feature that should result in a higher peak brightness. Alongside this, users can expect the usual 0.03ms response time and a peak luminance of around 1,500 nits, respectively. Additionally, the panel is set to deliver 99.5% DCI-P3 Color coverage and an HDR TB 500 certification.
Sadly, the new OLED monitor will not feature the latest DisplayPort 2.1 or HDMI 2.2 certifications. Instead, it will feature HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 – meaning we’ll likely see some form of DSC compression deployed.

With high refresh rate gaming becoming more sought-after amongst gamers, it’s no surprise to see brands taking aim at that 1,000Hz milestone. That said, it’s unclear how practical this monitor will be if/when it finally hits the market. Many users in the comments section of the Reddit post rightly highlighted the fact that achieving 720Hz is a near-impossible feat with the latest gaming hardware – leaving many asking the question, what’s the point?
Well, I suppose it all comes down to bragging rights – the world’s first 1,000Hz gaming monitor is a catchy title that could work wonders for any brand that manages to achieve that feat. According to notes made by VideoCardz, the monitor looks set to launch for around 150,000 Yen (1,000 USD) and looks set to launch exclusively in the Chinese and Japanese markets.
