You can draw many comparisons between Fields of Mistria and Stardew Valley. It’s a cozy farming and life sim RPG set in the beautiful village of Mistria, where you start a new life after an earthquake shakes the land. You’re given an old homestead and asked to help restore the town.

While still in early access, Fields of Mistria has been growing steadily in popularity. In the past week, it made an impressive jump of 38 positions on the Steam Deck Top Played charts, landing in the 12th spot after its third major update. This puts it right behind some of the most-played games on Valve’s handheld gaming device, including Stardew Valley, which continues to hold the top spot.

Fields of Mistria coming for Stardew Valley’s top spot? Probably not

What makes this rise so interesting is that Fields of Mistria is now starting to close the gap between itself and Stardew Valley, a game it is often compared to. You can see this in the game’s Steam reviews. Some fans even say Fields of Mistria improves on a few of Stardew’s frustrating systems with smoother mechanics and better design choices.

Stardew Valley still enjoys a massive playerbase, especially on the Steam Deck. Plus, the thriving community has many mods to play around with to bring a seemingly endless number of ways to enjoy the game. One we like to highlight is the Baldur’s Gate 3 mod for Stardew, which even got the thumbs up from Larian CEO Swen Vincke. As such, we imagine Stardew won’t be kicked off its throne by FoM any time soon, but it could soon make the top 10.

What’s in the new major update?

The reason behind Fields of Mistria’s big jump on the Steam Deck is a massive update that was released on July 21. The version 0.14.0 update is the game’s third major patch, and it adds new romance events, festivals, features, monsters, and quality-of-life changes that have made the game more enjoyable.

In any case, we’re expecting its popularity to rise further in the coming days, and it will easily enter the top 10 by next week. While it won’t snatch away the first spot from Stardew Valley, it will still set itself near.
