‘Gaming Console Mode’ for Windows-based handhelds is gaining traction with new update

Applications or operating systems designed to provide a console-like interface on Windows-based handhelds are getting more popular. Options like Bazzite and Winhanced arrive as compelling alternatives to the less-than-ideal experience Windows currently offers in handheld form, especially when compared to fan favorites like SteamOS. In fact, the main vision behind these projects is to make the experience of a Windows handheld as smooth and user-friendly as that of the Steam Deck.
Gaming Console Mode (GCM) is one such alternative that aims to deliver a true console-like experience on devices like the ROG Ally. According to one of GCM's developers, it allows users to set their preferred launcher, such as Steam Big Picture or Playnite, as the default shell, making it feel fast, focused, and console-ready.
GCM for ROG Ally is evolving
One of the developers behind GCM recently took to Reddit to share some exciting updates with the console mod. According to the post, GCM now supports custom shortcuts, allowing users to create their own key combinations. Additionally, the volume buttons on the ROG Ally now work properly without relying on Windows, and a brand-new onboarding system has been introduced to help new users get started.
The developers also teased upcoming features like a Hybrid Mode, which will let GCM remain in kiosk mode while still running Windows in the background. This means users can access system features like Bluetooth settings, all while enjoying a streamlined, controller-friendly interface and a custom task manager. Other planned features include a mobile-friendly function panel and a visual overlay for improved usability.
That said, GCM still has a long way to go, with handheld users continuing to request more features. If you're interested in trying out the current version or want to follow its development, you can join their Discord server to stay updated. Interestingly, GCM isn't the only console-like app coming up with neat changes, as Winhanced also received a major UI overhaul recently.
