Google just hosted its Made by Google event, and with it dropped all the info on the upcoming Pixel 10 phone release. There are already the usual improvements on offer, with increased performance, larger batteries, faster charging, and plenty of longevity in support.
But one thing that stands out from a techy perspective is Google’s changes in its Tensor chip. It has, in fact, announced that its G5 is moving process manufacturers. Shifting away from Samsung, it will instead be moving to TSMC’s 3nm process node. This is something that every other CPU and GPU manufacturer looks to be doing, much like Nvidia did between the Ampere and Lovelace graphics card generations.
This change comes five years after the introduction of its own Tensor processor. Now with the upgrade, it looks to improve its AI innovations via its custom silicon and improved machine learning on its smartphones. TSMC also says that 2nm technology is on track and has “made good progress,” but that tech isn’t quite ready for high-volume production.

The biggest changes with Tensor G5
With the move to the new process, Tensor G5 promises five key improvements to your phone. Here’s a rundown of what those are meant to be:
- Performance boost – the change is reportedly going to increase the TPU by 60% compared to the previous generation, and a 34% increase over the G4 CPU. It can also more generally improve the performance and usability of the phone that utilizes the higher transistor count on the chip.
- Focusing on AI power, Google highlights how much better its phones will be with them. Primarily, allowing the Pixel 10 to be the first to run Gemini Nano and full device capability. Utilizing the high-quality model to its fullest by faster and more efficiently than previous generations. According to Google, it can run 2.6x faster and 2x more efficiently in certain scenarios.
- New Pixel 10 features – The phone allows for the use of unique Pixel features, including: Magic Cue, Voice Translate, Call notes with actions, and Personal Journal. Tensor G5 allows for this proactive help all on device, as Nano enhances features too, such as Scam Detection and voice editing on Gboard.
- Best phone camera – Google claims that its Pixel 10 Pro offers the best smartphone camera for photography. Attributing some of that capability to the G5, which introduces an Image Signal Processor (ISP), working to provide the highest quality videos in whatever scenario. Along with providing a range of camera features, it is the first phone to include C2PA Content Credentials.
- Pixel battery life – Google says its Pixel 10 phones will have over 30 hours of battery life. Extending it to a lot more reasonable cases, where you might not need to recharge it as often.
